    Overview: Playback compatibility

Playback compatibility relates the source representation to the capabilities of the receiving app and its environment.

A codec name is one part of compatibility, alongside the stream's properties, packaging and the interfaces the player uses. The receiving environment determines which of those combinations it can handle. These pages establish the evidence needed before choosing direct delivery or a conversion path.

    • What determines playback compatibility?
Playback compatibility depends on the selected source and tracks, decoding and presentation capabilities, delivery constraints and the actual playback environment.

    • Client playback capabilities
Client playback capabilities describe the media configurations a particular player path can accept and present rather than a universal list attached to a device name.
