    Overview: HLS delivery

HLS delivery connects playlists with the media segments and timeline information they describe.

A playlist describes which resources belong to a presentation and how they are organized; the segments carry the media. A player uses both as the stream advances or changes representation. These pages explain the HLS relationship before a missing segment or stale playlist is treated as an encoding problem.

    • HTTP Live Streaming (HLS)
HTTP Live Streaming describes a media presentation through playlists that direct a player to successive media intervals and, when offered, alternative representations.

    • HLS playlists
HLS playlists describe representation choices or ordered media intervals, with tags carrying duration, initialization, publication and continuity information.

    • HLS media segments
HLS media segments carry timed media intervals whose packaging, initialization and decoding dependencies determine how a player can enter and assemble the stream.
