    Overview: MPEG systems

MPEG systems containers multiplex timed elementary streams in arrangements suited to different storage and delivery conditions.

A transport stream and a program stream both carry related media streams, but their packaging serves different environments. Transport-stream packetization and programme identification are especially relevant to continuing broadcast or network sources. These pages explain the container choice before moving into the codecs carried inside it.

    • MPEG transport stream (TS and M2TS)
MPEG transport stream interleaves encoded media and programme information in small fixed-size packets suited to continuous delivery.

    • MPEG program stream
MPEG program stream multiplexes related encoded streams into variable-size packs for storage and playback in comparatively reliable environments.
