    WebM Container

WebM is a constrained Matroska-based container designed for web delivery of encoded video and audio.

A WebM recording uses the same kind of EBML element hierarchy as Matroska, with a constrained set of media and feature conventions suited to web delivery. WebM gives the reader a more specific contract than “some Matroska tracks.”

    WebM component Reader's job
EBML header and WebM document type Establish which container conventions apply
Track descriptions Identify codec and initialization information
Clusters and timed blocks Supply each component's encoded data at its media time
Cues, when present Locate suitable media positions for seeking

The project guidelines enumerate VP8/VP9 video with Vorbis/Opus audio. Modern writers also handle AV1: the pinned FFmpeg n8.1 WebM codec map explicitly includes it. That is useful when a newer file reports AV1 while an older summary of the format mentions only VP8 and VP9.

    Browser decoding and synchronized presentation

A reader parses the document type and Tracks information. It creates a video decoding path for the declared codec and an audio path for Opus or Vorbis. Cluster blocks supply encoded packets and presentation timing. The playback framework schedules the reconstructed pictures and samples together.

The HTTP response's media type and codec parameters can identify this combination before the reader has parsed the complete source. The combination must still match the actual bytes. A declaration of VP9 does not convert an AV1 track into VP9, and the receiving framework needs the appropriate decoder.

An Emby library source can be opened and repackaged on the server or delivered in its original arrangement. Identify the selected output when comparing a browser's behaviour with another app: decoding the source on a server and decoding it in the browser are different routes.

What changing an MKV into WebM involves

Suppose an MKV contains H.264, AAC, an ASS subtitle, and attached fonts. Changing the extension does not change its document declaration, codec mappings, or feature set. A real conversion must choose a WebM-compatible representation for each component it retains.

If the input video is already AV1 and the soundtrack already Opus, a writer supporting that combination can instead copy suitable encoded media into WebM. It recreates the allowed structure and setup; it does not need to recompress the sound and picture merely because the file's name changes.

The distinction is between meeting the destination's contract and doing new coding work. The general Matroska format can retain a broader range of original components, while WebM provides a narrower delivery arrangement.
