    Overview: Scheduling and conflicts

Recording scheduling combines timers, series rules, resource conflicts and padding around programme boundaries.

A single event timer and a continuing series rule select work differently. Their requests can overlap, and padding extends the interval for which resources are needed. These topics make the selection and timing rules explicit before a late start or conflict is attributed to the recorder.

    • Recording timers
A recording timer retains a selected channel, intended time interval and recording options so the server can attempt acquisition at the required deadline.

    • Series recording rules
A series recording rule retains matching and retention preferences for a series, producing individual recording requests as eligible airings become available in the guide.

    • Recording conflicts
A recording conflict occurs when requested capture intervals cannot all be assigned compatible acquisition or processing resources under the implemented sharing and priority rules.

    • Recording padding
Recording padding expands the requested capture interval before and after a listed programme, trading additional source and storage use for coverage of timing uncertainty.
