    Overview: Audio return channels

HDMI audio return channels provide defined routes for audio to travel back from the television side of a connection.

ARC and eARC address an audio direction different from the ordinary source-to-screen video path. Their discovery, capability and transport arrangements differ. The two pages explain that return relationship before a particular audio format or receiver setup is assessed.

    • HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC)
HDMI Audio Return Channel sends supported audio from a TV toward an audio system over a designated return-audio connection.

    • HDMI Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC)
Enhanced Audio Return Channel expands the supported TV-to-audio-system transport and capability relationship beyond conventional ARC.
