    Overview: Output and transport

Audio output and transport determine whether a receiver gets a coded stream, decoded samples or another defined delivery arrangement.

Passthrough leaves the relevant decoding work to a compatible receiver. PCM output supplies decoded samples, while Dolby MAT provides its own defined transport arrangement. Comparing those routes helps identify which component interprets the signal and which information must survive the handoff.

    • Audio bitstream passthrough
Audio bitstream passthrough sends a supported encoded audio presentation to another device for decoding.

    • Decoded PCM output
Decoded PCM output sends reconstructed audio samples to the sound system after decoding occurs in the player or an earlier component.

    • Dolby MAT
Dolby MAT is a metadata-enhanced audio transport used for TrueHD carriage and supported PCM-based Dolby Atmos delivery.
