Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen) Will Not Play Movie. Says "Need Emby Premiere".

I have a Fire TV Stick connected to my guest room TV. Podcasts and music play fine.  If I try to play a movie or TV show it tells me I need to purchase Emby Premiere.

I have tried  different file formats (MKV, AVI, etc) to no avail. I have also tried uninstall and reinstall  ofbthe Emby app on my Fire TV Stick.

My living room TV has a Roku stick that plays movies just fine.  Both devices are connected via WiFi.

The Fire TV Stick streams just fine from YouTube TV and other apps.

Fire TV Sick is listed as an acceptable Emby device.

  Any help would be appreciated

Thanks,

Jim

As per:

Emby Premiere Feature Matrix : Emby

After trial period ends, you can either Unlock app (one-time fee) or subscribe to Premiere to enable Full playback.

Edit: As per same matrix, Roku app does not require same.

The difference here is the Roku does not require unlock/Premiere (unless Live TV) where all other client/apps do.

Hi. Did this answer your question?

I am still confused.

  • I have been using Emby on my Roku  for several years without any problem. Is it my monthly fee to Roku that covers Emby usage?  Why does this not work with Fire TV Stick
  • I tried Emby on my mobile device. It plays OK. Did I pay for that?
  • Emby on my Windows PCs and Laptops work OK. Did I pay for that?
  • What does 'Unlock' mean and what type of devices does it pertain to?
  • If I buy another Roku for my guest room TV will that work OK.

Roku is Free.  Fire TV requires unlock.  This was decided at the time apps were built a long time ago.

What mobile device?  What client/app?  But if a browser then yes it is free.

If you are referring to a Web Browser then yes it is Free unless using Premiere features shown in the Matrix linked above.

Yes as long as you do not do Live TV.

Almost all clients except Roku and Web Client ie a browser require unlock/premiere.

Emby on Roku does NOT require any purchase.
Emby on Windows does not require any purchase.
Emby on Fire and Android device requires a small one time payment after a short trial period.
Fire and Android devices link to different accounts and therefore, if premier is not purchased, must be paid for separately.
Unlock is what you do when you purchase on the Amazon or Android platforms.

As long as you use the same account all devices of the same type are activated by one purchase.

This really is simple so do not complicate it by overthinking.

Just clarify that it does not require any purchase using a web browser. Emby Theater for Windows requires Emby Premiere and cannot be unlocked with a purchase.

I'm curious what monthly fee you think you're paying to Roku?

Gilgamesh_48 your answer was sort of simple and allowed me to search elsewhere  and find the straightforward  answer:

That  answer for a Fire TV stick is:

  1. Try to play a movie.
  2. When it fails and says you need to get Premiere, instead select "UNLOCK".
  3. This allows you to pay Amazon around $5 for permanent access to playing movies, etc.

Pretty simple but all the information you folks gave me pointed in 6, different, confusing directions.

I asked about UNLOCK and no one brought up that the UNLOCK process is what allows a " small one time payment" I think my answer is  pretty simple/understandable!

And your comment "This really is simple so do not complicate it by overthinking." is just a demeaning comment. One that I would expect on Twitter, not a help site.If you really want to help, then help!

How does the matrix not say the same?

I guess no one understood the actual question you were trying to ask.  As I never saw any question on how to unlock the device.

You are right, because the answers were too general and I DID  specifically ask about UNLOCK in one of my bulleted questions in answer to EBR< On 6/18/2021 at 6:00 PM, >

GrimReaper76     had the answer that was the best one

Unlock app (one-time fee)

.In this case  I still didn't understand that the unlock fee was to Amazon and not to Emby, and I didn't know what "small fee" meant either.

In retrospect I have to thank all for your heartfelt help!!!! If I said anything that dissuaded you from providing help, I apologized.

In any event I typically use EMBY to locally stream my Movies and TV shows on my ROKU fed TV. I really don't see the point of watching a Movie on my Android tiny screen. I rather read a Book!

BTW: There is a similar topic on this forum that EBR answered. The answer to my question was quite clearly answered, but I hadn't found that topic at the time.

Lets call this topic as CLOSED!!

Thanks, Jim
