Unable to connect to Emby remotely

I have my emby server setup on a Raspberry Pi 4 8gb RAM running dietpi

I can connect to my server locally i.e on my network but am unable to connect off my network (have been testing on my phones data)

I have tried to set up port forwarding to port 8096 & port 8920 but neither of them seem to work

Not sure if it is an issue with my ISP blocking the ports or a as https://canyouseeme.org/ 'can't see any service'

Any advice would be appreciated

Hi, From the Pi, if you do a trace route to 8.8.8.8 what does the 2nd and 3rd line show?

That's great.  I was hoping you didn't get a 10.x.x.x response which is usually a good indication of CGNAT which can ruin your day. :)

If there is nothing personal showing up, can you post a screen shot of your router port forwarding?  If there is personal info you can PM it to me instead but better here if possible.

I tried to message you the image privately as my IP is on there but says you cannot receive messages

Sorry about that, my bad.  My message box filled up because I've been lazy clearing them out.  I'll work on that tonight but cleared out enough space to last me a day or two for now.

Can you resend it to me again?

You cold have posted that here as there's no private info in it just a reference to a private IP address on your local lan that isn't routable.

The forwarding shown looks fine.

The next thing I'd check is local firewall.  Your OS might have a firewall turned on by default which could be blocking inbound public IPs from getting to Emby.  Try turning those off.

okay, cool ... so i'm not actually sure how to check for a firewall if i'm honest. I'm pretty new to linux and the Pi so am lucky to have gotten this far with it really

Do you have a PC running Windows you can install TeamViewer on?

If so we could do a remote session and I could look over your settings, do a few tests and see if we can speed this process up?

Up to you, let me know.

so im currently on a mac with TeamViewer installed but I do have an old PC set up with windows 8 if you prefer to work on windows

Let's give the Mac a shot.  Worse case we can try again on Windows 8.

Send me over the ID and one-time password VIA PM when you're available or we can schedule this for a later time.

Thanks cayars,

was getting late last night but will be available to jump on TeamView whenever you're available again today

Did a remote session and discovered goob94 is behind a cgnat which I should have noticed from the tracert earlier, my bad.  Oh well didn't take long to figure that out. :)

Anyway @goob94is going to request a static IP from the ISP and we'll assist then if needed but I already made an adjustment to the port forwarding which was to the wrong IP so it may just work after a router reboot (and static IP assigned).

Thank you for finding the issue cayars

Have purchased a static IP from my ISP now so should update in the next few hours... will try again when I have my new IP and if i'm still having issues will give you a message

Thank you again!

Thanks for the help the other day

I am now running into a separate issue with emby now however...

Everything works fine on and off my network but as soon as I enable to VPN on my Pi I can no longer connect to emby. I can however still connect to the Pi through VNC so not sure what I need to change in order to get emby working again

The VPN connection essentially changes your WAN IP which is why you can no longer connect when it's running.

You need to:

1) Don't run VPN on your Emby Server
2) Use a VPN with Split Tunnel ability so Emby can run outside the VPN (normal).
3) Use a VPN that can do port forwarding.  You then setup the forwarding to Emby and reconfigure Emby to use this.

So unless you have a compelling reason to use VPN on the Emby Server, don't do it. :)
