Emby is not detecting all newly added files

Hi,

When I first installed emby it used to scan all music library folders for changes on startup and automatically add all newly found files to the database. Since a couple of weeks it's only partially detecting new files, meaning if I add 10 new albums to my music folders, it will find 2-3 albums on startup and then stop detecting the rest. The only way to make all new albums appear is by manually clicking on "Scan Library Files" and then all new files will eventually pop up, but the scan is taking much longer this way as it will re-scan everything again...

If I check the log I can see that all my folders are being monitored correctly, but not all will actually be scanned for new files:

Here it is... I have added this album today, just before starting emby (files added at 19:16 and emby started at 19:17) and so far it's still not appearing in emby after 30 minutes... and I have more than 10 albums added last week which are still not appearing... However a couple of albums added on Saturday are visible in emby so it looks like a random issue...

Is it possible that it's because this folder used to be empty until today? 

\\musixerver\1m\[Hi-Res].X

 

Because if I look at the log, I see that the next 2 folders are not appearing in the list of watched folders even if they are configured in emby... 

\\musixerver\1m\[Hi-Res].Y
\\musixerver\1m\[Hi-Res].Z

 

 

 

So watching an empty folder could maybe break the detection of newly added files to other folders somehow?

My immediate thought is the . is used in Emby to ignore files but you have [Hi-Res] in front of it - but in square brackets which emby may not be picking up as a normal name.

I'm not saying this is the answer, but can you try removing the .X and calling the folder [Hi-Res]X instead - restart the server and see if it then picks up items added to that folder ?

If you add to the other .{letter} folders - do these pick up ok ?

I presume you have checked the library is see if it's still set to real-time monitor ?

Lastly, do the items get picked up during a forced library scan ?

No, I have found those 2 folders also, they just come later in the log... ;)

But that XTC album is still not popping up...

Hi, I am not going to mess up my library organization because I am using it in other software too and that would be too much of a hassle. Other folders are getting picked up fine (see log entries below for files added on Saturday which were detected fine and there is a .T in that folder name also... and yes, if I force a library scan it will detect all files but it will take some hours to complete...

ok np - then how about create a new folder and temporarily copy it in there ?  Unless you are willing to experiment, then finding the solution is going to be more difficult.

Of course I am willing to experiment, but this is my live music server, I can't just break other software which is running fine ;)

Anyway, if I update the newly added files again while emby is running (by simply editing a TAG for example), then the change gets picked up by emby immediately... but changes done before starting emby are not properly picked up on startup:

So if I want to make emby detect the new files, I have to change their timestamp while emby is running... I am quite sure that this was not the case before and all newly added files used to be detected properly on startup...

OK, got it, thanks! When first starting with emby I had disabled the scan on startup because I was testing the program and starting it often and it was using too many resources on startup... But I still had the scan running every 4 hours and as I was not running emby for that long that was going well and the 4 hours task was still kicking in soon after startup.

Recently I have started using emby more and then the scan would kick in every 4 hours and running for 30 minutes every time, so I thought it would be best to run it only once a week and yeah, because of that my new files would not get detected anymore unless emby was running when adding them because real time monitoring was still enabled. So that was rather confusing as some albums were popping up immediately and others would take days to appear (up to a week because of the weekly task).

I got it now, it's all clear, thanks for the explanation, I'll figure out how to strike the right balance between resource utilization and the frequency of the scans ;)
