Limited manage server options

I am accessing the server through localhost:8096 and ip address, neither are working correctly.

When attempting to "Manage Emby Server" by clicking the gear icon, I am presented with the settings screen, same as selecting the user icon.

I am the administrator, the only options that I am able to see are the following under my username;

Display

Home Screen

Playback

Subtitles

Password

Profile

Under Emby Web the only selection is;

Keyboard and Remote

With this I am unable to access any options regarding metadata or auto organize or any other options that were available previously. Is there a setting that I may have messed up? I did not change anything, so I am at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there, are you sure you're logged in with your admin user?

Posted

I believe I am, is there a way to check? And if I am not, how do I restore admin account as there are only 2 users on login screen, myself and my sons?

TIA

Figured it out, somehow my account had "manage server" unchecked. Logged into my sons user and his had full access.

Thanks for the assist.

Ok, this getting frustrating.

I was unable to login to my server as Emby automatically logged me out and every attempt was met with invalid password. I restarted my server and was able to login, however now I am back to this issue as I have limited access and not able to get into the admin account.

1st question, how do I get back into an admin account.

2nd, why does Emby server log out and not allow a user to log back in? Going through the forgot password and entering pin did not work. The only thing that worked was restarting the computer.

I would check that the only account which is Admin is yours, remove admin from all the other users.  I would also ensure you have unticked 'remote access' if you don't need/want that - and I would also change your Admin users password.

That is the issue, I cannot access any of the admin functions. The only options I can access are the ones listed on my first post.

I am not changing any settings, nor is anyone in my house. Emby just takes it upon itself to lock me out periodically, when trying to login a week ago it overwrote my sons account which I used as my backup admin. So it to my admin account, changed it to a user account AND overwrote my sons account to my account which is is now a user account. So my name shows up 2x and either one I login with only has user rights, cant access admin.

Do you have remote access enabled ?  My intention is not to scaremonger, but If you have remote access enabled and weak/no passwords, then it is possible your accounts may have been compromised remotely.

Go to where emby has been installed - then find ..\programdata\logs\ and using notepad, search the most recent embyserver.txt file for the entry -

'Info UserManager' (no quotes)

This will show all the login activity - see if any of it makes sense - dates/times etc.

The logins make sense, a bunch of error messages showing how it wouldn't let me login.

What version of Emby server are you using? Are you up-to-date?

Did you ever use a backup plugin and recover users or something?

There is a reason for the insanity. You just have to know where things are different. What changed? Something on your end changed.

What it sounds like is your sons account and yours are somehow linked. When you change anything on one it affects the other. The link can happen if you both use the same exact Emby connect username? You are not using Emby connect are you?

It was working fine, I don't change any of the settings. Periodically it does this where I can't login. I get the "invalid password" message even though I didn't logout or enter a different password.

My account and my sons got linked because last week it logged me out again, I tried to enter my user name but it overwrote my account over my son's and changed it to a user account. So now there are 2 instances of my name and neither has admin rights.

I'm not even sure which route logs me in since I have so many problems logging in, I just try each way until it works

Does it also confuse your watched states, resume points, favorites up? Or do those appear separated for both of you? That is a good test to know how deep the waters run of confusion.

Yep, all of those are messed up as well. It's messed my account and my sons account up. I just can't figure out how to get the admin account back.

You are better off reinstall Emby server entirely. This time create a single admin user for yourself. Afterwards create a second account for your son. Afterwards create a third account and mark it hidden. Also make this third account an administrator with a strong password. That hidden user will be your way back into Emby server if you or your sons account becomes mangled afterwards. Then you just delete yours and your sons account from the hidden admin account and recreate them if this ever happens again. Having a hidden admin account for recovery of your server is better for you since it cannot corrupt or link into the other users.

Yeah, I was afraid that was the option I would have to take. Just hoping it won't take too long to redo my entire library. Guess its good I will be "working" from home tomorrow.

Will report back tomorrow (my time) with the results. Thanks for the tip with the hidden account, will do that.

ok - up to you if you wish to reinstall that will fix the issue sure, but it doesn't explain why the accounts have been locked out.

Did you search all the embyserver log files - the current one will probably just have todays activity in it.

If you do re-install, be sure to remove remote access (if it's not needed) and decent passwords.

My personal view is also to remove the possibility of remote admin for either your main and/or secret/backdoor admin account.  ie

How many users on the server?  I should be impossible to not have at least one admin user.  You can verify by looking in \users\policy.xml.
