My power went out last night from a storm and now I cannot connect to my Emby server. Is Emby down or something?

NM. I reinstalled the server software and it works again.

Sorry Emby is not working. It's not scanning new movies and doesn't show all my movie posters.

Hi.  Just FYI -  unlike the other guys, you don't have to go through us to connect to your server.

Glad you got it going again.

Sorry Emby is not working. It's not scanning new movies and doesn't show all my movie posters.

A power failure may have had any number of effects on your hardware setup so be sure about that and then please provide details of your issue if that doesn't lead to the problem.

Thanks.

How to Report a Problem

I run both Plex and Emby on the same server (it's powerful enough to do both) and Plex works 100% fine. Emby is not working 100%. I reinstalled the server software and was able to connect to the server again but now it won't scan new movies and a lot of my movie posters are blank.

Hi.  We're happy to help if you can provide us some details.

Thanks.

What details do you need? I'm running the latest server and media theater versions. Everything worked perfectly fine last night and woke up this morning and Emby no longer works.

I reinstalled he server software and now it won't scan new movies and half my movie posters are not displayed..

Hi.  I linked to an article detailing everything we need.  How to Report a Problem

But lets start with this - has the initial library scan from when you re-installed completed successfully?

Honestly it's too early for this. I'm very novice IT guy when it comes computers, Plex and Emby and I have been doing this for a long time now.

Yes, the server scanned all the movies and more than half are without posters now and it will not scan new movies.

I don't understand why it's not working correctly this morning, as I mentioned Plex works fine. So it's something specifically with Emby Server.

It won't even play any of the movies now. Gives me a playback error. Something is really jacked up.

STRONGLY suggest using a Uninterruptible Power Supply on your server. Heck I use several scattered about the house.

Emby Server Logs

There are multiple ways to access Emby Server log files.

  • Logs can be accessed directly within the server's web interface by navigating to Help -> Logs.
  • Additionally, the front page of the Emby Server Dashboard contains the path to your logs folder.

If you're having difficulty using the web interface, logs can be found at:

Windows: %appdata%\Emby-Server\logs

Find your logs and post them.

Not sure how or why, but everything is fixed and back to normal now. All my posters and metadata is showing up and media is playing fine. Very bizarre issue.

Presumably the first scan of the library had not finished previously, which would also explain not seeing new movies - it was in fact still busy.  People commonly get caught out by this, as it often takes much longer to finish the initial scan than people expect.

It probably just needed to re-scan the files to rebuild the database.

Yes, he really does need a UPS especially since he said he's a novice. One never knows what corruption or problems can occur when power fails. And make sure of backups too. Power failures can kill systems, especially if they go up and down quickly, etc.

Do you guys have any recommendations on where to start when looking for a ups?

It's something I've considered for my main server mostly to allow it to safely shutdown. The media is stored on a Drobo 5C which has it's own internal battery but the server itself doesn't have any protection.

I agree with this very strongly!! You do not need to spend a lot to get really good protection. I use several of these around the house:

Due to my rural location I have had several outages and surges and brownouts in just the last three years and I have lost nothing. I consider a good UPS a better investment than any form of insurance.

I am probably going to get another of these but at a higher power rating due to my current UPS being only able to hold my server array up for about 30 minutes. That means I have to do a shutdown for just about any outage and, while that is better than no shutdown, I would like at least an hour to decide what to do.

A good UPS is indispensable for reliable operation of any server system or for computer systems in general. I even put UPS systems in the indispensable category for any electronics that are subject to surges. A simple surge protector just is not good enough to effectively protect any important electronics.

A good UPS for everything important is simply way up on the "best practices" list, like #1 !!

It even makes for a better night's sleep and at my age a good night's sleep is VERY important!
