so the first time i ran it i thought it failed because i had a username with an apostrophe in the name ( "T'ler", short for tyler, ) so i deleted that user. but the error kept happening

PS i have cleared the backup directory multiple times, and the permissions are correct

PPS  the backup folder is on a samba drive mapped to D:

emby backup fail.txt was the first try, with the user t'ler

embyserver is with all my troubleshooting afterwards

emby backup fail.txt

It is odd that it initially show Path not found, but later starts to backup to that path.  Unless the mount just wasn't active initially.

System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException: System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException: Could not find a part of the path 'D:\embybak'

Do you have a log for after deleting "T'ler"?

System.IO.IOException: System.IO.IOException: Cannot create 'D:\embybak\Emby Backup - 2020-05-13 20.48.22 - Auto\users\T'ler' because a file or directory with the same name already exists.

Second log dies at a different user.

System.IO.IOException: System.IO.IOException: Cannot create 'D:\embybak\Emby Backup - 2020-05-13 21.3.21 - Auto\users\NErdgOd' because a file or directory with the same name already exists.

But a dev will have to comment on the character issue.

yea i saw that, in the first occurrence of the error, btw, the NErdgOd folder got created and populated, then failed on t'ler folder. dont know what to make of it. ive definitely tried after clearing the backup folder

Opps I miss read that quote error as there is no ending apostrophe.   But yes the user would appear to have been backed up previously.

Do you get that same result connecting to the server local versus your remote connection?

fyi you may want to sanitize your logs when posting directly on the forum.

tried it locally, same error but it got to the third user before it stopped.

I think the problem is network mapped drives? samba related? i switched from mapped network storage to local storage, worked instantly. seems like some sort of race condition scenario; writes the folder, checks for the folder, folders not there, tries to write the folder agian, but wit its there, samba just took too long to update?

out of my scope. but ill say this, the network storage is on the same machine the emby server is on, just ran through a VM network adapter. throughput is close to bare metal in my tests, i run games from it no problem usually ( its a gpu passthrough moonlight/emby server

just tested, no problems on networked destination or apostrophies/backticks in usernames.

Screenshot_20210326-183513.thumb.jpg.510eadb98952d7c38ab312cc0bd4857e.jpgSpoke too soon.

When restoring the backup, the apostrophe truncates the rest of the name, see pic (user name was T'ler, (apostrophe not backtick (didn't try to restore a backtick backup)))

Settings were fine, no password to test. Had orignal access to library.

Edit: This post topic has changed like 4 times now, if I need to make a new post I can, with a backtick user

I must admit I've never tested something like this.

My Question to you would be do you really need the apostrophe in the user name?
Isn't it a royal pain to enter on clients?

I'm surely not discounting what you've found but just asking.

Yea we'll take a look at this, but the most practical answer would be to not put a quote in the username.

Yes, that is the most obvious solution, it's not a requirement or anything, just an inside joke, but it obviously indicates somethings not 100% solid in some parser. I'm by no means a security researcher, but it's gotta be some kinda mild threat-- other than being an (extremely mild, I'll admit) annoyance.

Also some non-english origin names have apostrophes, De'Andre O'Connor, for example. If the problem was something like backslash or brackets, or pipes | , I'd not have brought it up at all

I was just bringing it to y'all's attention. Due diligence sorta thing. By no means do I expect this to be considered high priority, or fixed (I had already removed the apstrophe, I started using it again to re-test at your and @cayars request)
