JasonNalley 37 Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 (edited) Looking through the forums, there's been a couple of changes to how Genre imagery is displayed. I guess it was squares, then went to Portrait/Poster style, then back to squares... I also see on the github that there was/is default Emby Genre images that were/should be being added to the library as defaults. Some observations & Questions:1) I'd prefer either Poster/Portrait or Landscape/Widescreen (as the rest of the icons seem to be) as these squares are for the birds. It's inconsistent with the rest of the TV and Movies sections.2) Should the defaults be being downloaded? They are Portrait/Poster and the ones on my server/client are square, so I guess I'm glad they didn't download?3) Is the shape going to change again in a future update? I'd hate to have gone through a bunch of trouble of making nice Genre Icons, only to have another format change and they go WS or Portrait/Poster again. 4) Does anyone have any image packs with some clean looking ones available? I tried going through a bunch of the fanart forum, but most of the image sets I found were in Portrait/Poster or Landscape/Widescreen and not square. So they look funny when I replace them. Happy2Play 9780 Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 What do you see? But Emby has went to dynamic square images. There are lots of changes to the \metadata folder as almost everything goes to \metadata\library now instead of say \metadata\genres. Everything is subject to change in the future, that is why I manually assigned mine and update as needed. The big difference in the change is New install verses upgrade. Upgrades maintain your customization vs new starting over from scratch. I still us resource from github but you should look in the forum Fan Art & Videos section
JasonNalley 37 Posted March 16, 2020 Author Posted March 16, 2020 I see the following: I'd much rather have Poster format like you have there, however, a "Refresh Metadata" doesn't seem to pull the poster down, and when I tried putting in my own Custom Genre Image (admittedly it was in Landscape/Widescreen) it did not dynamically adjust the Square shape.

I will have to tests on a machine that already has square.
JasonNalley 37 Posted March 16, 2020 Author Posted March 16, 2020 I will have to tests on a machine that already has square. Thanks, but I'd like to confirm my understanding for a moment, If I make a Poster formatted icon (as you have in your above images), will it change from the 1:1 aspect ratio into the new Poster Aspect ratio? Is that how it's "supposed" to work? If so, I'm fine with that, as I can just make a bunch of them and replace the images. If that's not the case, why is this the only section (besides music and audiobooks obviously) that has a 1:1 aspect ratio? Even the Network Logos are Widescreen, and if anything, those are the easiest to make 1:1 square. It would make more sense to have the genre's 16:9 either in Portrait Orientation or Landscape Orientation, no? If for nothing else than to just match the rest of what Emby has going on in the TV and Movies sections?
Solution Happy2Play 9780 Posted March 16, 2020 Solution Posted March 16, 2020 Looks like the only option is Poster/Portrait or Square. I applied Thumb/Landscape and they remained square. Actually it is only looking at Primary image ratio. So uploading Landscape as Thumbs appears to be a issue so upload all genre as Primary. Once over 50% of genre images where primary 16/9, they all changed to Landscape. Now looking at a library where that threshold has not been meet. Remain Square. So you want all Genre images to be uploaded as Primary and have the same aspect ratio to get Portrait or Landscape. 2

I want to use them (or similar) on mine so it's not using the auto generated ones.

chenks 21 Posted May 12, 2022 Posted May 12, 2022 Do I have to download each genre image I want to use and manually apply it? Or can I set emby to use them automatically?

I used Download GitHub directory (download-directory.github.io) to get the entire folder.

Do the individual genre folders go inside the "metadata" folder...or do the individual genre folders need to go inside a folder called "genres" or "genres folders"? Here is what I have currently:
Painkiller88 249 Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 @Happy2Play Do you know where the genre images are located in the actual version of emby? In the named location i don't have a folder genres and if i create the folder and copy gernes, they are not recorgnized by emby. thanks
Happy2Play 9780 Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 @Painkiller8818 What is in your \metadata folder? As everyone should have a genres folder.
Painkiller88 249 Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 Only views is in there, nothing more, genres is what i copied in
Painkiller88 249 Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 i just used the web inspector on the auto generated genre images and thats where the inspected one seems to be: url(http://192.168.1.14:8096/emby/Items/529/Images/Primary?maxHeight=234&maxWidth=234&tag=46773114fd21cb97c4f3f67af28e94d5&quality=90)
Happy2Play 9780 Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 @Painkiller8818 Something is not right as you don't have anything. Now I would ask if you have a custom metadata path with that folder being relatively empty? 1
Painkiller88 249 Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 maybe because i outsourced the metadata to another drive in the emby settings? 1
Painkiller88 249 Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 yes thanks that was it, everything is in my own path. 1 1
