robertsturm 1 Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 Hello, I have recently installed Emby on my PC. I am not able to connect remotely to the server. When I am on my local network everything is working fine, but when I try to connect remotely I am getting connection errors. I tried to follow network troubleshooting guide. When I performed port test on port 8096 with CanyouSeeme.org, I am getting the message that the port is closed. As per my ISP all ports on router should be open. On the same PC I am running Plex server as well and I have no problem to remote connect to Plex server. If I run CanYouSeeMe.org on this port the test return open port. Plex and Emby public IP is the same only port on Plex is 22686 and Emby is 8096. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks, Robert
pwhodges 2014 Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 As per my ISP all ports on router should be open. Are you sure they don't just mean that they don't block any ports within their network? No one's router should be letting in traffic on any ports other than those explicitly opened up by the user - and I imagine that you haven't done that for 8096 as you must at one time have done for 22686.
robertsturm 1 Posted January 3, 2020 Author Posted January 3, 2020 Hello, Thank you for your reply. I haven't made any changes to the ISP router so far. I hope to be able to make the changes with, the privileges I have for the router. I will take a look and get back to you.

It would be very bad to have ALL PORTS on the router open...BackDoors for all sorts of malicious stuff. Some Netgear routers block Port Scan Apps. Edited January 3, 2020 by EODCrafter

I will take a look and get back to you. I forgot a crucial alternative (because I don't use it). In the network section of the Emby settings, near the bottom, is "Enable automatic port mapping" ticked? If not, try ticking it, and it should open the required port for you, using uPnP. Paul
Luke 42086 Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 it should open the required port for you, using uPnP. It should, but it's not guaranteed to work with all routers or network environments. You may still want to double check the router's port forwarding configuration.
robertsturm 1 Posted January 3, 2020 Author Posted January 3, 2020 Hello, thank you all for the advice. I will check this when back home.
pwhodges 2014 Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 uPnP should be switchable, on or off, in the router. Some people prefer to have it off, as there is a possible vulnerability if any malware gets into your system which can then use uPnP to open the floodgates from inside your network. None the less, I suspect that the commoner default is "on", and the fact that your Plex port seems to be open without your having done anything I took to be confirmation of this. Paul
Solution robertsturm 1 Posted January 6, 2020 Author Solution Posted January 6, 2020 Hi All, I had to manually configure port forwarding on my ISP router. All is working as it should. Thank you all for the help. 1
