Guest benderisall Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 Hey, First time user here. I just installed the emby server on Windows 10. I want to use it for myself only at home. So I want to make sure it's fully private and not having anything open to the internet. However I can't seem to connect to the server when using Emby Connect on my Apple TV 4K. I think the issue is that my Windows 10 system is using a VPN, the Apple TV isn't (but will eventually) and my other devices have VPNs as well. How can I setup my server privately with my situation? That being said, even if I "allow remote connections" enabled I still can't seem to connect using Emby on my Apple TV. Just sits there loading forever. Thanks.
Luke 42081 Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 Hi, Emby Connect requires access to the internet. If you're not going to use internet access, then you'll want to skip that when connecting from the Apple TV and just enter the server connection information manually. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.
Guest benderisall Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 Hey, Thanks for getting back to me so quick. So I tried entering in the In-Home (LAN) access address and it just goes back to the main screen (enter server address or login with connect). So it doesn't appear to be working. Should I be entering in the IP address or use localhost? Or would my VPN be causing that IP to be wrong?
Happy2Play 9783 Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 Can any other computer/client connect to your server locally? Sounds like a firewall issue. If UPNP is disabled on your router and automatic port forwarding is not enabled in Emby, there is not way to connect remotely without manual port forwarding on your router. Your VPN would create other issue with remote connection also if you were wishing for external connections. You should be entering ip address the server is installed on into the client you are trying to connect with, localhost only works on the machine Emby is installed on. VPN's should only affect Remote connections not local (LAN) connections, unless you have configure Advanced network setting on Dashboard-Advanced.
Guest benderisall Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 Sorry, I'm not understanding.I'm not finding any settings within Emby for "automatic port forwarding" or "advanced network settings".At least not with "allow remote connections" disabled. Are you saying even though I'm not wanting to go over the internet, I need to port forward on my router?
Luke 42081 Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 Or would my VPN be causing that IP to be wrong? It could be. Have you tried turning off the VPN and seeing how that compares?
Guest benderisall Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 No I haven't. Cause I don't want to disable my VPNs. I tried port forwarding on the router but it asks for a Local IP to do that. No matter what I put it's wrong. I assume that's because of the VPN. So every single person who runs an Emby server isn't running a VPN?

Are you saying even though I'm not wanting to go over the internet, I need to port forward on my router? Did you change anything on Dashboard-Advanced? No port forwarding in only required for External Connection. But if you changed anything on Dashboard-Advanced, you local connections can become considered External. But back to the first question can any other computer/client connect to your Emby server locally? No I haven't. Cause I don't want to disable my VPNs. Guest benderisall Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 Each of my devices have a VPN running so there are no "local" devices. That's the issue. The Windows 10 has it's own VPN, my phone has it's own as well. The only thing that doesn't have a VPN currently is the AppleTV. So as I am seeing it, nothing is local cause the VPN makes it seem that way. Besides unchecking "allow remote connections to this Emby Server." I haven't changed anything under Advanced.
Happy2Play 9783 Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 (edited) I have devices on vpns and am still able to connect to them on my LAN via their LAN ipaddress. But I guess if LAN traffic is being rerouted then you only option is if your VPN has port forwarding option to all Emby port traffic. But personally see no reason someones LAN should requre this unless it is some sort of public network. Edited September 29, 2019 by Happy2Play
Guest benderisall Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 So I think I'm just stupid lol So I logged into my VPN account and added a forwarded port. I updated Emby to do that. That was not done before (never needed it before). The other issue was the IP of the server. So there is an local IP for the VPN and a local IP for the computer (both on the server computer). I just tried connecting from my phone and Apple TV to the server using that local IP and it has now connected. So it seems to be working locally now but my concern is the IP I am using is not static. My ISP/router does change this every so often I believe. So I think that's going to be an issue.

You should be able to statically assign every device on your LAN a ipaddress if you wish or have your router reserve that ip for that device/MAC address.
Guest benderisall Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 No idea how to do that but will look through my router. Thanks for the help.

Guest benderisall Posted September 30, 2019 Posted September 30, 2019 I haven't actually had a chance to look but I am using the default router/modem combo from my ISP and I'm pretty sure my ISP doesn't allow you to set static IPs. However I believe the IP doesn't change unless my system reboots (which isn't often). So it's not the biggest deal. I will look at my router nonetheless and see if there is some kind of option. But I have been enjoying emby otherwise.I'll post back if I can't get something going. Thanks.
Solution Guest benderisall Posted September 30, 2019 Solution Posted September 30, 2019 Actually, that was easy. Found DHCP Reservation in the router. So I'm set. Thanks for the help. 1
