Live TV Setup on Linux Server

Hi all,

I haven't yet started with it, but I am thinking about to use emby also for Live TV.
I am running Emby on a Debian machine, which does not yet have a TV Card installed, but - I do have the possibility for using a nearby Cable-TV connection for this.
Now, I am searching vor a (probably built in PCIe) TV Card, which is working on Linux and supporting Digital Cable (DVB-C) - I think, one of the best options would propbably be a Haupauge Card.

What are your experiences?
Can you recommend something?

Any advices before I start with buying stuff from your side?

Thanks and with best regards,

Christoph

I'd be interested in knowing if it's as simple as buying a card and plugging in the Cable and being able to Stream Live TV. Let me know how this works out! Right now I use IPTV for this.

Hi All,

before I wanted to start with Live TV from my Cable Provider, I wanted to try Live TV with an m3u playlist.
Unfortunately, it seems, that I have messed up something... ?!

I've added an m3u Playlist for German TV Channels to Emby:

5d46c85e4c78d_2019080413_55_54LiveTV.png

But I haven't found any provider for TV Guide yet...

I do not have the Live TV library visible in my Emby front end, and - I cannot delete the m3u Playlist from the Admin panel.

Also, The Site is showing, that I do need an Emby Premiere Subscription... which I have (monthly)

Can someone help me with this?

Thanks and with best regards,
Christoph

The Warning you need a Subscription is always there. We can't see your German m3u so there is no way to see if it's legit or not (Does it Play in VLC?)...try this site for a free playlist....https://github.com/freearhey/iptv

The m3u is playing fine in vlc.
I've tried adding the m3u list you have provided - still I do not have the Live TV option in my Emby Website nor in my Emby Theatre :-(

Also, I am still not able to delete the m3u lists from the Admin Page... ?!
Any Idea about this?

Click on the 3 dots....delete.... Since there is no EPG with either yours or Mine, you will have to select the Channel list in Emby rather than being able to use the guide...Here's a SS....5d46d210d0d41_Capture.png

Also I do not have any option to delete the whole m3u from the LiveTV Settings in the Admin Panel... ?!

sorry for these dump questions... But maybe, I just look at the wrong place?

Click the help button on that screen and our wiki will tell you the supported devices.

Hm.. ok, seems, that hauppauge will only be supported on the Emby Server for Windows?

--> About how I can delete the m3u files:
I've now just deleted the livetv.xml from /var/lib/emby/config/

@Luke: Is it correct, that I do not have any delete option within the m3u Live TV Settings with Server 4.2.0.40 on Linux?

To delete tuner.

If you want to use a Hauppauge tuner card in Linux then you'll need something like TVHeadend to manage the tuner card itself and then use one or more M3U links from Emby to TVH to access the streams/channels. Once configured it's as seamless as the native tuner support in Emby.

As you can see in my Screenshot above, I do not have these three dots...
But thanks for the guide with adding a Hauppauge Tuner on Linux... I will have a look if I can manage this when I have a bit more time for it.

Have you checked your user settings -> allow live tv management?

Also I do not have any option to delete the whole m3u from the LiveTV Settings in the Admin Panel... ?!

Yes, it's a bug. You can still use delete with an other app, Android for example.

Which version is missing the 3-dot for the tuners?

Which version is missing the 3-dot for the tuners?

Pretty sure it was the last Beta, Let me look......4.3.0.0-beta It's not listed in the release notes, but me and a few others noticed it on the last Beta Version. I never had to delete the Tuner so I didn't really care.

I am not using the Beta Version.
I am using the current stable 4.2.040

Regarding the instructions:
This was partitially for confirmation with the missing dots... I was confused, because I thought that it might be related to a misconfiguration or that something else was wrong on my setup.
Finally, I have totally missed, that theres a dedicated section for allowing live TV access on the user profile - I thought, I gave at least full access to my admin account... that's why I messed up this part :-/

But to be honest: I have currently canceled my Live TV trials, since the m3u sources I have found right now didn't work as expected.
I still need to do further tests with these

- the first m3u playlist started every channel in a loop after 30 seconds,

- the first m3u did just contain a few channels - most I was not interested in... So, I still need to find an usefull m3u list for german tv channels.

Or, I start with the test of using my tv cable provider with emby

Hi all,

back to my main topic with having the option for liveTV over my cable network on my Linux server...

This seems to be a bit more complicated, than I thought :-(

Click the help button on that screen and our wiki will tell you the supported devices.

On the help-page, hauppauge is listed as:

Hauppauge TV Tuners (on Emby Server for Windows)

Also, I only found some devices, which seems to be compatible with linux.

Finally, I found a TV Card, which provides Linux drivers, but would need a playback software.
They have DVB viewer or MediaPortal in their list of "recommended" Application, and both are supported by Emby (Plugin), but at least, there are only Windows Versions available.

Finally, I just figured out, that there are a few applications availably, that COULD support TV Cards under Linux:
gnuTV -> https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/gnuTV/

or VLC

unfortunately, both options are not suppored by Emby (at the moment) :-(

Would it be possible, to implement at least one supported application for Linux distributions?
I think, most users would have VLC - so this could be an option for Linux AND windows users... (VLC can also work as a Streaming Device, which is, as far as I would imagine one of the requirements, emby would need at that point ?)

For linux you can use tvheadend and then import tvheadend content using their m3u output feature.

thanks, TVHeadEnd is also on the supported applications list from the card vendor :)
Then, I think, I have, what I need... Thanks a lot!
