Disable Transcoding

I would like to disable transcoding for all users.

It uses far too much CPU on my NAS and just discovered most files that were transcoded before, play well without transcoding, on my PC (chrome), Phone (chrome and Android app) and Samsung TV.

Chromecast seems to be the most problematic and will not play a few but just stops playing, no errors or anything to worry the users.

.

Emby only seems to use transcoding for the mkv in my libraries, all mp4 (tested) are fine.

It transcodes even when the file plays well on the device directly.

Slowly I will convert these problematic mkv to mp4.

I will ask my users to contact me with any offending titles and I will re-encode the these manually, to mp4 and reupload.

Figured out how to turn it off for individual users and 3 of the 4 options are obvious to me.

But this one:

*Allow video playback that requires conversion without re-encoding*

What exactly is this?

Conversion?

Is it cpu intensive?

Cheers.

Only seems to use transcoding for a couple of titles that it does not need to. These are old movies and delete now but questions still remains.

What is conversion?

That is either a simple remux (change the container) or an easy audio conversion. Both require very little CPU usage and are performed very quickly.

Ah thanks. I will leave that option enabled then :)

Hi there, emby server already avoids transcoding whenever possible. Please make sure to see the help text underneath the options before changing them, and please turn them back on before reporting problems. Thanks.

No worries. I wont report any transcoding problems.

Quite simply I do not want MY NAS to transcode.

I have found that when transcoding is disabled, if the media will not play, the software (which only seems to be ChromeCast) seems to quite gracefully stop. This lets me know which videos I need to manually re-encode using handbrake etc (or just delete).

This is a much better solution than the nas getting its cpu bombed out and no-one being able to play media.

Going forward I am confident that every video I encode myself will work with all my users/clients. If it does not they will have to update their software/hardware if they want it to play. Simple :)

All my current movies are already in a queue being re-encoded, Just need to go through several hundred TV episodes which will take a couple of hours to check but will be very well worth it in the long run.
