Split an Episode into Multiple Files (Naming)

So I'm currently adding a show and an episode on TVDB has an example title of "Episode Title Parts 1 & 2". The problem is that I have two files. One for part 1 and one for part 2. Is it possible to have both of these episodes be recognized without offsetting the entire season by an episode number? Its basically the opposite of https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/TV-naming#multi-episode-files

- Episode 1 part 2.mkv

 

In thetvdb, is show as one Episode

We don't fully support multi-part episodes. But here's two options:

• They might get grouped together as one video with two versions. You can use the button at the bottom of the detail screen to split them apart. This way they will appear separately in the episodes list.
• Or you can use mkvmerge to merge them into one mkv.

I had this problem with an anime where TheTVDB lists two 25 minute episodes as a single 50 minute episode (which in my opinion is incorrect, but I don't seem to have the ability to edit TheTVDB).  The specific episode is this one: https://www.thetvdb.com/series/monogatari/episodes/5276091

I have two separate files

S04E01 - Ougi Formula - Part 1.mkv
S04E02 - Ougi Formula - Part 2.mkv

As a quick fix, just so Emby shows the files in order, I did the following:

1) Leave part 1 as the episode file, named as is

2) Rename all subsequent episodes to match TheTVDB's "wrong" naming (S04E03 -> S04E02, etc)

3) Copy the real Episode #2 to the Specials folder, and give it a number high up (I chose 51).

4) In Metadata Manager, find the episode and modify the text to indicate it is part 2 of S04E01, fix the "Episode Number" if necessary, and use the "Special Episode Info" section to lock the special into its proper airing order.  In this case, I set "Airs before season" to 4, and "Airs before episode" to 2.

I obviously think the best and most proper solution would be for TheTVDB to fix its database, but this will work for now if you don't want to have to join the files, or if joining the files causes warnings/errors/playback issues (like it did for me).  I can also see how Emby supporting split files would be a good thing as well, so I'd love to see that in the future.

This happens quite often with anime - episodes are broadcast in different configurations at different times, or changed for physical release.  In this case, although my blu-ray has two separate episodes I simply joined them together to match the broadcast version; this works for me, though your solution is quite neat.  The first of these episodes doesn't have an ending song, though the second has an opening, so they seem a bit mixed up.  The final season, Zoku-owarimonogatari has the same issue, in that it was broadcast both as three double episodes and as six singles.

Another example is InuYasha which has about half a dozen doubled-up episodes in some versions - but in that case TVDB has them separate, so it's easy to deal with using the s01e21-e22 (or similar) labelling if necessary.

This thread is pretty old at this point.  Has a proper solution been implemented? 

Right now I have

&

ShowS01E01-part2.mkv

 

and I can access both parts in emby but when part 1 finishes it autoplays episode 2 so unless I go back and manually select the second part I don't see the second part.  It would be nice if I didn't have to spend time merging these files.

 

Let me know if there is a way to do this so auto plays part2 after part 1 and if there is not let me know if there are plans to implement this and if not I will bite the bullet and merge the files.

Hi, there is no official support for this yet, we will get there, but even when that happens I would still recommend joining the files.

I created chapters in files with two episodes - with timestamps for each episode. Is it possible to show episodes based on the timestamps in files rather than the files themselves? This way I would have complete episode list with thumbnails and could easily navigate through them instead of having only half of episodes listed and needing to change chapters when I want to select a second episode from the file.

Why not just split the files into two?  MKVToolNix will do the splits based on the timestamps you've already added.

Well, each double episode has it's intro at the beginning and credits at the end. If I do the split then some episodes will miss the intro and some the credits part. The other thing is that you can only split at key frames without reencoding which is not always precisely at the timestamp I added.

In that case, you can have all episodes listed by giving the files their full names, like s01e01-e02.  There will only be one entry and thumbnail, but the titles and descriptions for both episodes will be concatenated.  And you can still select your chapter marker to jump to the second part of the file.
