another mkv question

so I am using makeMKV to turn my dvd copies into MKV's.

when looking at the contents while in makeMKV I see two surround sound tracks in english. The only difference I see is that one is marked default and the other is not.

Are the essentially the same? is it safe to delete the non default one to save space?

It will vary per title, but yes usually it is safe to just keep the default and discard the other. The other could be commentary or some other special track for a specific purpose.
