Question re: Direct Stream

So I had a hung tuner that I just discovered thrashing the hell out of my HDD via log files, and when I checked the dashboard the only activity going on was my son Direct Playing something.  I restarted the server via CLI and it restarted what he was watching from the beginning w/ a black screen for 30ish seconds.  I was under the impression a Direct Play completely bypassed the server and thus a restart of Emby Server would/should have no effect on what's being Direct Played.  Am I wrong or ...?  Unfortunately this happened the same time as the orphan tuner was bombing out for days so my complete logs are a bit under 1GB per day, thus I won't be uploading them anywhere.  Any insight/clarification is appreciated.

In the case of streaming boxes like the Android TV ones the content is always delivered via http through the server.  Only the desktop/htpc applications will go direct to your file system.
