ernstgot 17 Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 Is there a way to get HDR from within WMC with Emby?
Luke 42077 Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 Hi @@ernstgot, Emby for WMC simply uses the built-in Windows Media Center video player, so I think what you mean to be asking is, does Windows Media Center support HDR? Do you know if Microsoft documentation has any information about that?
Solution jachin99 88 Posted September 27, 2017 Solution Posted September 27, 2017 No, its impossible to get HDR from WMC, and MS won't ever update it to add support. If you want HDR 10 then you need to setup an external player in EMC that supports MadVR. I think MPC-HC is the player of choice around here but be warned, setting up it all up is quite a feat. 1

jachin99 88 Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 (edited) I stand corrected. 4k & HDR 10 support I believe are in the pipes for an upcoming build of LAV. This means if you use a codec pack you might be able to get both in WMC and EMC. I could be wrong but I think this might happen. I think the latest nightlies support it https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/commit/499aca4ebf01dec35a0af702e682643028d274da https://files.1f0.de/lavf/nightly/ I just downloaded the latest nightlies, and I see 4k as an option for resolution. More importantly it looks like it supports anywhere from 8 to 16 bit color bit depths. So it looks to me like WMC might get this after all. Edited October 13, 2017 by jachin99
jachin99 88 Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 Alright, here I am to correct what I said earlier to what I said even earlier than that once again!!! HDR10 is a apparently something the video renderer must support. WMC uses enhanced video renderer, which was introduced in WIn Vista, and does not take advantage of HDR 10. LAV does support increased bit depths, which will give you more colors but what makes HDR so great is how much the colors "pop" and that is something EVR probably can't match. This doesn't mean you can't get great picture quality but it does mean you won't be getting HDR without Mad VR. Unless emby wants to somehow figure out how to bolt Mad VR onto EMC. I spent a good two or three hours looking into this today alone and the whole topic of filters, video renderers, video service providers, disc formats, displays, signal chains, and what color standard, resolution, and file size is my movie actually filmed it is incredibly confusing. I'm convinced I could master quantum physics before I could figure out my TV 1
