How do I use Emby Connect for outside connections?

/me uses IPv4 for Router Forwards and has full working IPv6 in his LAN... Does your Apple device support DDNS?

From his dashboard capture, even his lan (internal) ip range is puzzling, for me anyway.

Like OP, I am highly uncertain about disabling ipv6: Emby should adapt to his computer, not the other way around.

How about just trying whatismyip and using what it spits out?

I haven't disabled IPv6 and tried IPv4 port forwarding in that config yet.

 

My IP to the WWW is an IPv4 number.

 

This Windows 10 system is the first time I've encountered IPv6. I don't know how/why it's using it inside my LAN. Or why Emby Server uses that instead if the IPv4 address for its outside connection.

I've got a few things to try, now.

 

1) I remembered I had the VPN running last night which might confound the connection

2) install emby server on my Mac and see if I can get port forwarding to work

3) disable IPv6 on the PC if I must.

I've tried that without success. But I'll try again to make sure I had the addresses entered correctly.

Ok, I'm making progress!

 

I installed Emby Server on my iMac. Its WAN is a "normal" IPv4 address. I setup port forwarding for that machine (using its LAN 10.0.1.16 to port 8096). On my iPhone on cell service, blammo, I connect to the iMac's Emby Server easy-peasy, and see the local home-video library I let it use for testing.

 

Next up, test Win10 some more including disabling the IPv6.

 

Another possibility is that the Apple router has the "Block incoming IPv6 connections" enabled. Maybe that's part of the problem and should be disabled? So many features, so little knowledge on my part.

And it's working!!!

 

I had assigned a static IP to my HTPC on my router before starting all of this. But I hadn't rebooted the HTPC. I rebooted it. Emby Server then showed the IPv4 address for the WAN connection (external conection). I set the IPv4 port forward settings to the local IP of the HTPC (10.0.1.35), port 8096, and type "Personal Web Sharing" (the internet says that's necessary for an Apple router).

 

I think it was Windows 10's IPv6 addressing and/or not rebooting after assigning a static IP in the router.

 

 

To summarize, in case someone is looking to setup Emby external connections on a Win10 PC and has an Apple Airport Extreme base station for their router:

 

1) Ignore the Emby Connect stuff to start. That's a red herring. Listen to everyone in this thread shouting at me to port forward.

3) Set a static IP for your media PC. I looked at the current IP address of my PC and reserved that one. All the websites show the hard way to get your Windows MAC address. The easy way is: Windows Search for Settings. Then click the Network & Internet icon. Then click the View Your Network Properties link. Then follow this guide:

It looks like this on the iPad airport utility.

4) Reboot PC (crucial step!)

5) Check that Emby Server now shows the IPv4 address for WAN, something like http://50.100.190.80:8096

6) Port Forward. Note that this guide is pretty current and says to use the description option of "Personal Web Sharing". I used "Emby" and it still works.

7) Quick check that port is open:

8) On iPhone turn off WiFi to connect to cell service. In Safari, type in the Emby Server WAN address, the http://50.100.190.80:8096 type address you found previously.

9) Open the Emby App (if you use that) and check that.

The local IP (10.x.x.x) is shared by LANs everywhere.
