Roku ultra supported formats?

Hi, was considered replacing my HTPC with a roku ultra for my front room (just a tv, nothing special). Just had a couple questions.

 

1) I looked up the suppported formats, but it says "USB supported formats" i would assume that means through the emby beta app as well, not just the usb, is that correct?

 

From the Roku website:

Video — H.264/AVC (.MKV, .MP4, .MOV), H.265/HEVC (.MKV, .MP4, .MOV); VP9 (.MKV)

Audio – AAC (.MKV, .MP4, .MOV); MP3(.MP3, .MKV); WMA (.ASF, .WMA, .MKV), FLAC (.FLAC, .MKV), PCM (.WAV, .MKV, .MP4, .MOV), AC3/EAC3 (.MKV,.MP4. .MOV, .AC3), DTS (.MKV, .MP4, .MOV), ALAC (.MKV, .MP4, .MOV, .M4A)

 

 

2) Is the DTS that supported include DCA? (my emby media info for blue rays shows DCA as the codec but profile DTA) 

 

So, if 99% of my media i used MakeMKV and the live TV uses the hdhomerun extend, the media should direct play on the roku (other then other than the older MPEG2 dvd files i still have hanging around).

Here are some screenshots from blueneon app running on a roku ultra.

 

1) See the first screenshot for supported container/codecs

2) DCA is all the roku supports for dts, the dts core audio. The roku does not decode this, it is pass-through only.

 

Note: in the [audio decode info] section DTS is missing because my TV doesnt decode it. If my TV did, the roku wouldve detected this, and DTS: 6:0:0:1 wouldve shown in that section.

My TV doesn't support DTS either, so i guess emby would transcode the audio on most of my media. Have to look at the other devices maybe.

Converting audio doesn't require a lot of resources and almost every device is going to do the same with audio.

Understood. It's hard to move away from the full HTPC but it's overkill for a simple TV (I'll keep the full HTPC for the basement main viewing setup).

 

I figure the Roku is the best option (as it's for Emby/Netflix/amazon prime) and no gaming (so don't need a shield) or is the shield that much better?

Ok, so i got a roku ultra and its been going well. However, i find that emby is reducing the audio stream to MP3 with very low volume.

 

@speechless, attached a pic of the device info (looks the same as your sample) if you have some insight? Thanks!

Does the Roku use the Downmix Transcoding option?

I left it as default (1) on the server side. I didn't see any options within the preview app. (Unless that was directed @ebr)

The preview app has no options for this...

 

The blueneon app has specific settings to choose which codec is used. It also allows you to choose aac, mp3, or ac3 and has the ability to transcode dts/dca to ac3 and keep surround sound.

 

Does the TV you connected your roku support dolby? If not, the apps will detect this (via roku system audio settings) and will transcode all surround sound to stereo.

 

To increase the decibel level when transcoding, use the server dashboard. Choose the transcoding tab, and set audio boost to 2. Every 3db doubles the sound pressure level. So 2 should be fine.

Roku Ultra has a new firmware update 7.51.4095 to 7.51.4111 .. hmm

 

Anyone updated to that build besides me?

Here is the spec sheet for the audio of the Sony TV. It says is supports DD.

You need to make sure your roku audio is set up correctly.

 

System > Audio > HDMI

 

Your HDMI setting should be set to dolby d+. Do not use auto as it causes issues.

 

System > Audio > Audio Mode

 

The audio mode setting should have auto chosen. Auto does not cause problems here.

 

Once you change these...

 

System > System Restart

 

When the roku reboots back to the roku homescreen, turn off your TV, then turn it back on. This should restore hdmi/hdcp sync for the audio change.

 

This should fix your situation, hopefully. *Crosses fingers*

@speechless I tried specifying the HDMI to DD and also tried DD+ (with a reboot and tv off/on) and in DD the video went all pixelated and unwatchable...and with DD+ it resulted in the audio being played funny (Only like a bass track or something...)

 

I just ended up back at auto for now and see what the next beta ebr talked about does. Unless you have another idea!

Haw, then its the same issue I have. If set to DD+, the wrong sample rate is used. It isnt just a bass track. That is the sound s l o w e d down.

 

What I did in the end is choose pcm stereo for hdmi, and stereo for audio mode.

 

This still has the app detect dolby digital, and passes dolby digital the same. So something in rokus firmware is definitely broken in regards to roku ultra audio.

Ya, @@speechles i did the same (as you said, the auto setting seems to work the same as specifying PCM and stereo) so I put it back to auto for now to try the .18 release when it comes out, and the next firmware...

 

I did change the downmixing level to 1.5 on the server side, that seems to keep all the different media within a few volume clicks of each other.

 

Side question...Obviously you have a roku...what is you opinion on the nvidia shield tv... I'm just curious as I'm not completely sold on new roku yet (as the shield seems handles more video and audio formats it seems and less transcoding for the server)

The Shield is pretty much the best you can do short of a full HTPC - but you do pay for it and you may or may not really need whatever additional perks the Shield may offer.
