Trouble with Collections

I'm having issues getting movies to display as collections in the FireTV client.  I've attached images of the server settings as well as what it looks like in the metadata manager.  I do have a collections folder displayed on the client, but when I move through the regular movie folder nothing is grouped correctly.  Am I missing something?

Thanks.

Hi, does this feature work properly for you in the web app?

Posted

No it does not work in the web app

Can you show a screenshot of what you are seeing in the web app? Thanks !

How did you create these collections?

Did you use the server feature or Auto BoxSet plug-in or did you create physical folder structures?

From the first screenshot I would assume nested Collections.  You can have them, but you can't have metadata in that collection folder if you want Emby to group them.  Emby creates collection metadata in a different folder then actual media.  Emby only honors (legacy nested structure) reading the metadata and showing on some but not all collection views.

I used physical folder structures.  Screenshot attached along with the collections.xml file that was created.

collection.xml

Ok, the grouping feature is reserved for newer collections that are built with the web interface. The old folder-based collections are fine for MovieDb metadata purposes, but we have not been giving them them the full feature set of newer-style collections.

Luke - a bit confused by that answer.  I'm actually troubleshooting on behalf of a family member.  The screenshots and info are from him.  I have a server that is configured the same, using physical file structures and it works with no issue.

Again thanks for all the help.

It might work but we are not testing it ourselves, so that makes it hard for us to speculate as to what the issue might be.

Right, Emby only groups items for collections created by Emby and stored in "C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\data\collections" get grouped.

If you want them grouped you would have to delete all those collection.xml's and either use the Auto boxset plugin or manually create them via the web interface.

The server will honor the collection.xml as you have them but not fully as you see.

Getting back to this as I have some time.  Still struggling to get this working correctly.  I've gone screen by screen on two different Emby servers (one mine, one my brother's) and confirmed they are configured exactly the same.  However, if you look at the screenshots the end result is different.  On the home screen screen, when I click on my movie library, you'll notice my brother's pc (PC2) has a different menu then mine (PC1).  Any thoughts on why this is different?

When my brother clicks on the collections tab, you can see Emby is grouping them properly, it just adds a step of going to the collections screen.  Ultimately, the collections dont show up on his FireTV.

PC1 has "Display a collections view to show movie collections" enabled.  Dashboard-Library-Display

Actually is your library content type set to "Unset" on that movie library (since you are getting Folder View).

Content type is set to Movies.  I also checked the Display collections view to show movie collections...both PCs have it unchecked.

Look at the urls one is itemlist.html and the other is movies.html.  Will have to do some more testing since I haven't seen itemlist before.

Okay, itemlist is only found in "Folder View"  or "Unset" content type.

How old is this installation?

If this is what my testing is showing, this is from settings that were made a long time ago and have been removed from the UI. (ie User preference settings to <PlainFolderViews>)

There is a config file that can be modified to make your brothers view like yours if that is what you want.  But Emby's preferred method is just enable "Display a folder view to show plain media folders" via Library-Display.

But if you look here you can still manually force a per library Folder View, as I suspect your library is.

My brother's installation is only a few weeks old.  Mine is about 18 months.  Versions are the same.

I'll try changing the config when I get a few moments and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again for the help.

Honestly if you want this to simply work and stop wrestling with this, do the following:

  1. Move the movie folder out of their collection folders.  Using an example from one of your earlier screenshots, move the 'Airplane!' and 'Airplane II the Sequel' folders to E:\Movies.
  2. Remove the E:\Movies\Airplane Collection [boxset] folder.  Note, you might want to dump this in a temp folder as this way uou have the art in case kt's no longer available on fanart and TMDB.
  3. Make sure E:\movies is shared.
  4. If it isn't already, add the path '\\<Your Server Name>\<Share name for E:\Movies share>' to your movie library.
  5. Perform a library scan.
  6. Run database cleanup.
  7. Verify all your moved movies are correctly identified.
  8. Install the autoboxset plugin, restarting Emby if prompted.
  9. Run a library scan.
  10. Recreate any collections the plugin didn't already rebuild as kt will only create ones that exist on TMDB.

When I made the same transition that all took me about an hour for a library of around 1500 movies and 150ish collections.  Most of that was scan time/cleanup time so I wasn't exactly busy during it.

This will get you collections that work correctly with all clients consistently.

This really won't make a difference as one is displaying Folder View and the other is Enhance View (Suggestion,Movies,Trailers,Collections,Genre,Studio).
