Separate commentary track format

Hey guys, I've searched all over the site and can't seem to find a specific answer. I generally use ET and when there's a commentary track built into a movie file, there's a music note to change the audio track. This is great, but I'm having issues with a track that's a separate file. I've put it in an extras folder with other files (deleted scenes, etc), but the option doesn't show up. Placing it in the main movie folder still doesn't work. Does the commentary file have to share a common name with the movie file, or go in a specific folder? Any help is muchly appreciated, thanx!

As far as I know it has to be in the same container as the other tracks to be selectable.  (i.e. in the movie file)

Ah, so since it's a separate file it's a no-go?

Luke confirmed it so you would have mux that track into the movie container.
