Nick's MCE 59 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Hi Getting very frustrated trying to get my 3rd HTPC to connect to server. I have installed MB3 to a third HTPC but it won't find the server. I have tried both automatically and by putting in the port and I.P manually but just won't connect. I have done this on 2 machines already so I thought that I had it down pat but there is obviously a technical issue. I can see and access the machine through the Home Group and the Network with no problem. I have copied the log file below which says there is some issue. Thanks in advance. ebr 16169 Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 What happens if you try to bring up the web client on that same machine?
Nick's MCE 59 Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 Thanks for replies. Hope things make sense below, is there anyone who can decipher the log file above as it shows an error. Lets call the server machine 1 and the problem machine 2. Originally I was running a server on both machines with my library duplicated on each machine. I then decided to remove the server from machine 2 and stream from machine 1 with 1 server. The reason for the change is because I need the hard drives out of machine 2 to put in a new Q-NAPS TS421 Home Server. Ultimately the whole house will stream from the Q-NAPS. I needed to get machine 2 streaming from machine 1 temporarily because setting up the Q-NAPS may take me sometime as I have never done it before and am venturing into new territory. Funny thing is that when I had the 2 servers setup I had to manually enter the I.P's because machine 1 and machine 3 was always finding the server for machine 2 which now can't find anything. I took these steps. Removed MB Server from 2 , (removing all traces) I then set-up another user on machine 1 server. I then launched machine 2 configurator with automatically find server, "could not connect to server" I then manually entered IP and Port, again could not connect. I then removed MB Classic and deleted any files I could find, (thinking machine 2 was some-how looking for its old server.) Re-installed MB Classic and did above again, didn't work. Then re-installed a server back on machine 2 and mapped the folders back to machine 1 through the network. Machine 2 then couldn't find its own server.
Nick's MCE 59 Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 OK, tried to find anything I could in the firewall and allowed the connections, didn't work. I then turned off the firewall and I got a connection, do I need to make some exception or something in the firewall so I can turn the firewall back on or now that the connection is established can will it work. Thanks Nick
techywarrior 689 Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 You need to make sure that both ports, 8096 and 8945 (doing from memory so double check in the web dashboard) are being allowed.
Nick's MCE 59 Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 I checked in the firewall on incoming and outgoing and anything I could find with media Browser was allow all ports, not sure where else to look.
Nick's MCE 59 Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 I wrote an incoming rule for 8095 and 8945 for ICP & UDP, 4 rules in all. Fired up the second machine and I was able to connect to the server. My problem now is I can't play anything, all the media, clear art and backdrops are there but nothing will play. I get an error message saying "cannot access media, will attempt to stream, use UNC paths on server for direct access" I have used Network paths, \\NICK_MCE_2\Box Sets. , I must be missing something, any ideas. Thanks Nick
Koleckai Silvestri 1154 Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 If I am not mistaken, the default port is 8096, not 8095.
Solution ebr 16169 Posted January 6, 2014 Solution Posted January 6, 2014 Make sure whatever Windows user is running MBC has access to those UNC shares.
Nick's MCE 59 Posted January 6, 2014 Author Posted January 6, 2014 Thanks First problem was the firewall which I solved by writing the port rules. The UNC paths were correct but and I had the drives shared but not the sub-folders. All working now. How do I mark things as solved.
