Guest shawly Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Hi, I want to share my library between all of my devices, the thing is, I don't want Plex with PleXBMC, one reason is, that Plex is transcoding the file before streaming it to my HTPC, which I don't want. Also PleXBMC is beta and it doesn't integrate without special Skins and I only want Arctic Zephyr for Kodi. Using MySQL for the Kodi database requires that I also install Kodi on all my devices and I find Kodi inconvenient on touch devices, even if it's optimized etc. Then I heard the Emby addon pretty much replaces the Kodi backend, but Kodi still works the same. The only thing I wanna know is, does Kodi still transcode the files itself or is Emby just like Plex and only streams the files to the devices and Kodi works as client?
Solution fc7 123 Posted October 15, 2015 Solution Posted October 15, 2015 As far as I know there are three options when it comes to Emby for Kodi (EfK): 1- direct play: meaning that EfK will directly access the media asset from the network share and play it (if it cans). In this case EfK will require access to the network shares where your media is allocated. 2- direct streaming: in this case Emby will serve the media asset through http/https directly to EfK without transcoding. This mode doesn't require access for EfK to your media as in case 1. 3- transcoding: if EfK can't play the media asset because of bandwidth restrictions or codec limitations then Emby server will transcode and serve the transcoded asset to EfK via http/https. Guest shawly Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 (edited) 1. is exactly what I need! That's just perfect! Emby will run on my home server which serves the nfs/samba shares and Kodi already has access to the network shares over gigabit ethernet, so that is exactly what I need! A little off topic question, can I create my own libraries with Emby? Because I want to separate TV Shows and Anime. Edited October 15, 2015 by shawly

Yes you can If you have further queries related to the Emby for Kodi addon please post them in the Kodi section.

But I have one problem, when I try to add a folder to a library, I get thrown back to the login screen, what could cause this problem? When I type in the path manually, it also throws me back to the login, but the folder gets added, but scanning media still doesn't work. Could this be related to path access, since I run this on Debian? Edit: Yes this was the problem, lol. Edited October 15, 2015 by shawly
