Episode image naming convention

How to name episode thumb (landscape) so it gets picked up as thumb-type image instead of primary-type one? Tried with "-landscape.ext" but that one gets completely ignored.

In addition, why does manually assigned thumb-type image get saved only in server metadata folder when it is explicitly opted-in to save artwork in media folders/next to media?

Thanks

There currently isn't a naming convention for that, and so that's why it goes into the metadata folder.

I think we consider the thumb of an episode to be that of its parent Series.  I've never heard of an episode have a bespoke thumb image...

Well, can we implement one (<episodefilename>-landscape.ext seems like a natural choice, moreso as it does get saved as landscape.ext in server metadata folder)? It can be assigned and it is used if present (takes priority over Series thumb) - and there are few new plugins (and few old ones, including CoverArt) that make use of it.

We currently utilize Series thumb if episode thumb not present. And as no naming convention, it can't be automated, just manually assigned. Trying to change that.

Since episode primary images are landscape to begin, with, what exactly is the use case here?

Home Screen shows Series thumb by default, which cannot/doesn't have any of the treatments few plugins offer for episode images. Series thumb takes priority over episode primary image. Episode thumb takes priority over series thumb. I've elaborated on that years ago (2023).

It does. After testing all combinations of images at series/episode levels, CW/NU rows get episode image in following fallback order:

1. Episode landscape

2. Series thumb

3. Episode fanart

4. Series fanart

5. Episode thumb (primary-type image)

6. Series poster

As 1. and 3. are never present by default - upon import/identify/image fetching, unless assigned manually - basically default behavior is 2->4->5->6, which are scraped automatically (if available). Lack of any of those (or addition of other types) causes behavior to be adjusted accordingly.

But isn't that configurable now...?

Configurable as in what? CW row - either default or custom - still gets Series thumb if "Thumb" image type selected (and stable has no configurable Home Screen rows anyway).

If you set that image type to "Primary" you should get the episode image there.  Isn't that what you're after?

It ain't, you're getting Poster if image type Primary selected.

I honestly don't understand the reluctance here nor what is unclear in all this.

There's an image type that can be assigned, is used by Emby core and is utilized by multiple plugins (including your own CA, as stated).

There's no naming convention for it (although it is saved under certain one within server's metadata folder, breaking opt-in option to save artwotk next to media).

There should be one.

As elaborated few years ago, it's the difference between:

(Episode 2 - no episode landscape, default/current Emby behavior)

and

(Episode 1 - episode landscape (thumb-type image) available).

So, same image (series thumb) with/sans treatment. If series thumb was copied as episode landscape, noone would see any difference - except CA users; there will be absolutely no change for average user compared to current presentation except making use of CoverArt overlays/treatment for Premiere users that opt for it. Not to mention sating that consistency urge and scratching that OCD itch.

That was only CA plugin example. There are multiple plugins nowdays that overlay that episode landscape image (Iconic, EmbyIcons, EmbyNewOverlay...).

Sorry, I thought we had discussed this pre-implementation and that we decided the episode image is what should show there instead of the Show poster.

Its not unclear its just that nothing in the wild will assign a thumb image to an individual episode.

I don't mind getting my hands dirty and writing a script to work around that - but I need Emby to pick it up somehow. Aside from the concept itself in which we have an image type that is practically in limbo (and it's actually the highest priority image-type used in CW row episode-wise).

As stated, it can either be done by the server automatically by copying series thumb (or episode thumb/primary image if one prefers) as episode landscape and noone would be the wiser. Or simply give us the possibility to import those ourselves programatically.
