Moonfin, a new cross platform client

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi everyone!!!!

I'm the creator of Moonfin, a truly cross platform media client. If this is your first time hearing about the Moonfin project, welcome! Moonfin is a little shared ecosystem of third party clients that shares UI, functionality, and features across TV clients, Web, Mobile, and Desktop clients. It has been around since November 2025 and it is now on basically every platform you can think of. Up until now it was a Jellyfin only thing, but that's no longer the case.

Moonfin Community Discord: here

Moonfin website to test the web client and see more info here

──────────────

How it works

Everything is tied together by the Moonfin Server Plugin, which now installs on Emby seamlessly. The plugin is what powers the shared Moonfin experience across all of the Moonfin clients. It lets you log directly into Seerr, holds server wide MDBList and TMDB API keys, syncs your settings between Desktop (web gets counted as desktop if accessed through desktop or mobile if accessed via mobile browser. neat right?), Mobile, and TV, and handles the features and integrations that make the whole thing feel consistent no matter where you're using it.

Install the plugin from here on your Emby server, point any Moonfin client at it, and you are good to go.

──────────────

What the clients bring to the table

NOTE: ALMOST everything here can be toggled on and off. No setting or UI is forced on you. It is YOUR media, YOUR way.

  • Featured media bar slideshow with image preloading and content filtering, 5 different styles to chose from
  • 4 Custom app themes and the ability to create your OWN custom themes as well
  • Fully customizable home rows, including Seerr rows, TMDb rows, IMDb lists, and MDBList lists with proper posters
  • Cross server playback, so multiple servers show up as one unified library
  • Full Seerr integration with a dedicated requests screen, push notifications (as phone notifications and in-app banner for TV and desktop), download progress, and issue reporting
  • MDBList ratings from IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Letterboxd, Metacritic, Trakt, AniList, and MyAnimeList
  • Two different media detail screens with different styles and layouts to best suit your liking
  • Live TV and DVR with an EPG refresh and lazy loaded programs
  • In app YouTube trailer previews with SponsorBlock, theme music, and audio and subtitle delay adjustment
  • Full playlist control with no item limit
  • PIN protection per user and parental controls with content rating filtering
  • Ebook, comic, and audiobook readers, plus a retro games library if you're into that (I know you are, dont lie)
  • Offline mode with local first playback and original or transcoded downloads

Why so many clients?

A lot of people ask how Moonfin ended up with separate clients across so many platforms.

It honestly started pretty simply. The original goal was just to add the featured media bar to the Jellyfin Android TV client. Once that existed, people started saying it would be cool to have something similar on their platform. Then feature requests started coming in and it kind of took off from there.

At the same time, platforms like webOS, Tizen, and Roku didn't really have alternative clients available like Android TV, Android mobile, iOS, and Apple TV have, so it felt like a good opportunity to create some. I enjoy building things and helping where I can, so I started working on ports. Having LLMs around for quick experiments, refactors, and figuring out unfamiliar platform quirks definitely helped along the way too.

Why open source and why not charge for it?

Honestly, I just enjoy building things and helping people. Open source lets others learn from the project, contribute if they want to, or adapt things for their own setups.

I have no plans now, or in the future, to make any of these paid.

Great app !

It would be nice to explain how does app interfere with emby premium limitations and counting devices for premiere ? With details.

We asked emby devs, but of course they needed 3 weeks to respond and after that nothing is clearer, we know even less.

There is no code that is linked to or interferes with the official emby app's premium limitations or device counting.

I m pretty sure ebr will find a way to block 30-40 devices using third party app and not getting a penny for premiere.
Just wait a bit....

Hmmm so this whole thing seams more AI work that anything, even your first post?

Care to explain how this has been made / if and how AI has been used.

Hmmm how did you develop this?

First relese 28 mar. 2026 v.1.0.0

Releases · Moonfin-Client/Moonfin-Core

Then yesterday 16 jul. 2026 v. 2.3.0

Releases · Moonfin-Client/Moonfin-Core

Definitely AI Work.

Be WARNED fellow Emby users.

This new dev. has posted this from a Zero Post Emby Account.

It might be leaching your data.

It comes with a plugin, and that could give away sensitive info about you setup.

It might leach login credentials / IP adresses + what ever metadata to sell.

I would strongly advice about NOT using this.

Hello @Neminem! The project itself has been around since I think Nov 24 2025. It started as a fork of the official Jellyfin Android TV client then later I moved from the forked version to my own Flutter client so I had less codebases to maintain and easier to iterate features and archived the old repo so people wouldn't get confused. The account has no posts because I've never posted here before, had some current Emby users suggest I do so.

The codebase is fully open source and you're more than welcome to look through every aspect of it for anything malicious. It's free and I dont ask for payments to use or a subscription or anything. It might not be everyone's cup of tea and that's fine, everyone has their own opinions, likes and dislikes, but to claim something is malicious without looking through the codebase is a bit much. The app and plugin collects 0 data about anyone or their setups, it doesnt even send any external data anywhere except for the Seerr notifications to Android mobile and iOS for system notifications through Firebase and even that can be changed so you can use your own Firebase account for notifications.

Well that you word and my suspensions, point and case.

I have no dev experience, but I do loath AI and AI created anything.

So with out just trusting your ZERO reputation in this community, I do not trust a word of what you are saying / writing.

Funny you did not answer any question about, see below ⬇️

My bad, didnt scroll all the way up and missed it, just went off the last email notification link.
Yes AI has been used, it's an open fact that AI has been used in the project. The first iteration last year had heavy AI usage due to wanting to jump in and add the feature I wanted to enjoy the app my way at home. I had no android development experience and wanting to enjoy my little project on the side to get away from the boring monotony of corporate dev work where there's literally no room for anything creative or fun. As I learned more I made mistakes and used AI to learn more not just about android as a whole but media apps.I made plenty of mistakes along the way and used AI to help me fix those mistakes, hell I'm still making mistakes now. I understand you loathe AI, and that's fine. Like I said, it's not for everyone since everyone has their own likes, dislikes, and opinions. I'm not forcing anyone to use the app or even charging to use it like some other AI coded, assisted, or slopped apps are. I literally made this just because I thought it was fun and thought some people would enjoy it as well, I gain nothing from people using it or not using it really. Just thought it would be fun and maybe even help some folks handle their home media in a different app they might like, that's all.

I don't like AI in general, but can't say I dislike code generating AI more than the rest. I just look at the spectacular potential to throw thousands out of work and the potential for yet more enrichment of the already obscenely rich. Plus I see how useless AI is when trying to contact anyone with any kind of enquiry online and get some moronic AI agent. I also see the years if not decades or malicious software out there all (I presume) written by actual malicious humans. Moving out of caves was the first mistake we made.

Any idea if this works/displays fine with the customisable rows Emby introduced recently to the home screen ? Ditto for the Emby spotlight ?

Than delete Emby right now, since Ai is used in Emby dev also.

Some brief thoughts after extensive 5 minute play with Windows app.

On a 4K monitor everything is really small, any size adjustments anywhere, especially for text.

No sign of user added rows on the Home screen - I have a large spotlight row for family items, another for cartoons and another for Winnie the Pooh.

I looked at the Themes tab in settings and still have no idea what to do or where to get any.

Backdrops are very faint and covered over and I'm a big big big backdrop fan- how do I get stuff to look your first screenshot above ?

How do I stop it playing trailers ?

If it doesnt appear on first run then take a look at the Settings > Personalization > Home Screen > Home Sections for your home rows as well as more options

You can use the ones already included or create your own! Once the server plugin is installed you can access the Theme Editor by:
going to http://<server IP>/Moonfin/Web/theme/index.html
if using the web version of the client Settings > Theme Editor
or online here

then upload the theme.json file into the server plugin under Themes

There are 2 different media details screens you can choose from: Classic or Modern. I think Classic might be more your style, go to Settings > Personalization > Details Screen

Thanks very much for the quick response.

The main lesson, so far...is maybe I should have tried checking out the settings in the app not the ones in the plugin. Duh.

Anyhoo -

- Size on monitor - extra large is much better.

- User added rows - didn't sopot anything, maybe they're not being picked up or not sure what to do with them. i.e.

List in Emby (Family is superbig spotlight, like yours and Animation and Winnie the Pooh and just normal rows, all added by me in Emby. Would be nice if they just transferred over.)-

MoonbaseSectionsinEmby(Small).jpg.b2bc889a013a36f008bc96a8dcf7a776.jpg

List in Moonfin -

MoonbaseSectionsinMoonrise(Small).jpg.940dfb86167814b03b510c8a00e790a8.jpg

- Will look at themes a bit later.

- Backdrops and Modern vs Classic. What I get -

Modern -

MoonbaseDetailsModern(Medium).thumb.jpg.be514b6166fbdcf254b25f3569872f45.jpg

Classic -

MoonbaseDetailsClassic(Medium).thumb.jpg.bb9949b801ae0eb696e080d4ee8031ab.jpg

and in Emby with extra css -

s- Stopping trailers - done. Thanks again.

Re themes - I thought, or was hoping, there was maybe a collection of Moonfin themes people have made and uploaded somewhere ?

Thank you I'll take a look at the emby rows and how to better transfer them over. For the classic details screen there's also a blur option to make the backdrop clearer (I prefer no blur but it's there so everyone can try things how they like) and for the modern I'm adding a slider for the scrim so people can choose. There is a Themes repo that people can submit themes to and it's available for ALL Moonfin users, look for the Theme Store setting (it's all free, just looks nicer and easier to translate)

Thanks very much. Scrim = lighting / illumination ?

Would be nice to be able to move info down to the bottom to show the backdrop a (lot) more if possible...

I'll look at themes.

Was just playing a 4K (Toy Story 4) in the Windows app and it says - Failed to initialize a decoder for codec 'True HD'.

The audio for the 4K version is apparently English True HD 7.1 and gives the above error and silence.

The audio for the 1080 version is apparently English DTS HD MA 7.1 and seems fine.

Having a quick play with it so far and I like the emulator support, not sure if my issues but live tv is not working for me, but will report back later once i have had a proper test using the different clients.

Current issues:

live tv tunes to station, but does not display anything only a spinning circle, this is on android and the windows application

The /Moonfin/Web interface never loads in the brower

Movies when I click play, i have an intro video play before the movie, this shows no controls and then takes a couple of seconds longer than emby to start playing media

There are other UI issues for me, but I am playing with the settings and if need will report on this separately

Hi @GrimEvil!

I'm pretty sure the live tv woes are caused by this:
go to Settings > Playback > Video > Live TV Direct - disable this toggle for live tv direct play

the web client issue was just reported for some emby users yesterday and I'll have it patched for a new plugin coming out later today

Even with it disabled I still get no playback and we really need live TV to direct play same as the emby client as transcoding is not the best option, if you have a couple of users 😀

Makes perfect sense, I'll get on my emby server and do some more testing then, thank you!
