Robert526 0 Posted Thursday at 05:41 AM Posted Thursday at 05:41 AM I had windows home media server until they stopped support, so I was forced to use server 2016 and at the time pl""x was the big player so I got a lifetime pass. Now over 10 years they became so complicated that sharing even files to my self is 4 weeks of forum support and seems they want to get into everything but not stick to their core values. Im a simple man that wants to share pics, movies, docs across home network and through apps. I need a simple setup that just works. Id post this in a server forum but didnt see that option. Whit apps I mean the native app I can install in my car and stream my movies or share them with wife. Nothing crazy and something easy to setup on network without getting comcast involved. Im tired of what I have but would this be a good fit for me? if so and how. I dont see a windows server download for this, is this supported?

If anyone else wants to chime in im all and yeah I feel stupid asking on forums there because I feel like I should code and post some logs i dont understand.
GrimReaper 5042 Posted Thursday at 07:05 AM Posted Thursday at 07:05 AM No worries, just go through the above links, download and install server; if you hit a wall at any point during the process, just post again here. 1

Let me preface this with I have not used Windows personally in 20 years. I can describe a common Linux setup and you can find the Windows equivalents. First thing to do would be to identify what media you want to share. You got that, so you're off to a great start! To keep things simple, I would bundle pictures and documents into one application; Nextcloud. It's been around forever and is very mature and stable. Lots of documentation and help is available. You will also be able to migrate your contacts and calendar to Nextcloud if you are interested. I personally found the photo's portion of Nextcloud to be just "okay", so I installed Immich. I literally renamed it on my wifes phone and she thinks it's Google Photos. If you have comics and/or ebooks, Komga is excellent. That coupled with comictagger is an unbeatable commbination. And lastly and certainly the most important (IMO) is your movies, TV shows, and music. Emby is so damned easy to set up, the people on the forum are incredibly helpful and for the most part nice. There are the occasional rude poster, but they are exceedingly rare. Emby is available on all the major smart TV's and we have a native Linux app in Beta right now. This last step ties everything together. Caddy is a reverse proxy that is dead simple to set up. Couple that with a domain name from Porkbun and you have a homelab available from anywhere. I bought my domain for $5.17 and I am kicking myself for not doing it sooner. Good luck on your set up!

RanmaCanada 558 Posted 16 minutes ago Posted 16 minutes ago I think the biggest issue you might have is with your car. Android Auto support is a large can of liabilities..
Robert526 0 Posted 2 minutes ago Author Posted 2 minutes ago Actually it works great, Netflix, HBO, Hulu prime only issue is plex because they apparently link forums to emails to server to tokens to users to your great grandfather bank account and NOOOOOO simple way to reset. Plex if I had it setup would work in car. I use outtaai box or something like that. That run android over apple play and its awesome. Whole android access besides plex since I have apparently 3 accounts 27 passwords my token is on some server and nothing can be fixed why i was looking at this. My other question is pros and cons of using this vs jellyfin. Sorry noob so I will have a ton of questions.
