Subtitle Styling Request on Apple TV (tvOS): Color + Background/Transparency Options

Hello everyone,

I’m using Emby on Apple TV and I’d like to request a feature that would make a big difference for me: the ability to customize subtitle appearance directly in the Emby tvOS app (text color, background/box, transparency, outline, etc.).

I’ve tried everything through tvOS (Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning, creating a custom style) and I also tested with text-based subtitles (SRT/SubRip), but Emby doesn’t seem to apply any of those changes — subtitles remain white.

To confirm it’s not a tvOS limitation, I installed Infuse and there I can set subtitles exactly how I like (yellow text with a semi-transparent black background). So it looks technically possible on Apple TV. The issue is that Infuse is paid, and here in Brazil it’s not cheap to keep a subscription just for subtitle styling.

Is there any chance you could add an in-app “Subtitle Style” option for tvOS in a future update? Even a basic set of controls would help a lot: text color + background (with transparency), and maybe outline/size.

If there’s any hidden setting, workaround, or if this is already planned, I’d really appreciate any guidance.

@marcelosoreThere is already subtitle settings for Emby on Apple TV you need to open the Emby App on the Apple TV, go to Settings > Subtitles, then scroll down to Subtitle Appearance. Make sure you are up to date for the Emby App, past versions didn't have this feature

You’re right — I checked again and the options are there now. It must have been added in a recent update, because last week I tried everything and I’m pretty sure this menu/setting wasn’t available yet

Yeah I think the settings were added in 2.0.5 so it hasn't been out for too long.
