Emby Connect, what kind of black magic is this?

Eventhough i have used Emby of and on for years, the Emby Connect is something i never used as i only used Emby on LAN and I figured that it had to do with remote acess.

I read the knowledge but still didnt get it..

It is a way for remote login using users own email?

Or do the use mine to locate my server remotly?

Could somebody please explain this to me like im a 5 year old..Or somebodys 75 year old grandpa..

Thanx from the nursery or the old folks home.

Media I,

As admin you would control access for remote users by giving them your confidential Emby server access.  That would start as an IP address that would show up in your Admin General page once everything is setup correctly.  You should not post this IP address anywhere in the forum or make it public online.  It is only for your invited members to know.  The IP could be convert to an actual domain name link, if you setup SSL, which is a 3rd party service offered by hosts.  Sometimes this can cost as much as $150 or so a year or it can be free, depending on if you let your host do it or do it more yourself with some some 3rd party services setup.

Once the user has the IP or domain name address, they will also need a login and password to get to your Emby server home page.  All this has to be setup correctly and there are a few steps involving your server settings, your firewal and your router. For some people, who lease a router from a host, there can be more steps because the host locks some settings down.  The entire setup is moderately advanced.  If you have done no network setups before, you would be better off asking for someone local who knows networks better to help you.

Hope that helps.

Thanx brother.

I might add that i use reverse proxy with Caddy and NO-IP so my server adress remotley is a https domain name.

I could just add a nutbuster of a password in my caddyfile.

I might have articulated it from the wrong angel, i have,(in my own humble opinion) experience in networking and i have no problem with the networking parts as such.

Its just the Emby Connect funktion within Emby itself im wondering about, i have no problem with connection, just curious.

I was under the impression that a user could use a email adress registred by me (admin) to easly acess server remotly?

And if so, how secure would that be?

N.

Aha, I will also be interested in an answer to that.  I have no idea.

Emby Connect allows a user to link their Emby.Media account to their local user account on your server. They can then login via app.emby.media, which will connect them to your server.

This allows users to select from a list of servers if they have more than one linked to their Emby Connect account, without having to remember each ones address. It will keep track of changing addresses if you're just using a raw dynamic IP instead of a domain for external connections.

It also allows users to reset their passwords on their own (via emby.media password reset), as a local user cannot reset their own forgotten password without involving a server admin (changing this has been an open feature request for years...).

Essentially a DNS service with a few extra features specific to Emby.

Thanx!

But exactly how do i as admin give a user the possibility to acess my server this way?

Do i use there own email when adding them to wmby connect in the user settings on my server?

And they get a emby connect account that way or do they get that themselves?

And when acessing my server for the first time they select emby connect and acess their user profile, and if they have a password they enter that after acessing server trough connect?

Im guessing this works on Android TV and Apple TV aswell?

Does that guve them possibilty to get remote acess without SSL cert?

Thanx!

I slightly miss-spoke; users can't link it themselves, an admin has to add the users email via the severs user configuration page for them.

All it does is pass the 'Remote (wan) access:' address listed on your server dashboard to the user when they login to app.emby.media, while telling your server this user session has been authenticated via emby.meia (the user successfully logged into their emby.media account), so the user doesn't have to use the local username+password configured on your server.

It does still validate ssl certs if you've set that up; but you have to ensure the wan address on the dashboard is correct: 'https', uses the right domain/ip, and displays the correct port you want used.

Ok, thanx!

As I mentioned earlier Caddy takes care of ports, so my server is a Https:// and then mydomain.me so remote acess is all setup already.

Just thought it might be an easy way for remote users to acess the server without sacrifice security.

Emby Connect is just a shortcut to save users from having to remember your server address. It will try to connect using the same addresses that are displayed on the main page of your server dashboard.

So the manually entered 'external domain' in the network settings is where this comes from? Meaning no automation? And the server needs either a fixed IP or domain?

I was looking at switching to the new letsencrypt short term SSL certs that are a public IP instead of domain name. I would have to automate updating the emby 'external domain' for that to work?

No, it will auto-detect your remote ip if left blank.

Hmm, my server is saying it is unreachable. I will start a separate thread to troubleshoot if it continues.
