No Trailers on Samsung TV app - taking ages for release still on 2.2.5

True it expires after 30 days of compilation, but just temporary until the store gets updated.   I guess it depends on how important trailers are to someone.  Especially for those of us with TVs that are 4+ years old because they are no longer supported by Samsung's normal testing and Luke has to do a special request to update older TVs.

@FrostByteand @Lukethis wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t taking months and months for samsung to do anything. My TV aint that old it’s a 2022 Art Frame which I paid a pretty penny for.
Feels we are being treated like second class citizens by Samsung as all we want is our trailers back and via an easy to install App Store process to avoid constant sideloads. Not too much to ask I thought.
Any help on leaning on Samsung appreciated

We do bug them every couple weeks and ask for status updates.

In the meantime the company I'm working for has managed to submit and release several updates to a Samsung Smart TV app with a usual turnaround of 3-4 business days. Most of the process is actually automated, even more so if you have successfully submitted apps before and this is just an incremental update with no elevated system requirements. I'm pretty sure you are doing something wrong if it takes them months to approve an app update, I've personally never experienced delays like this.

@Luke@FrostBytethe post from @vicvipermakes some legitimate points. Each day I check to see if I’ve moved on from 2.2.5 so I can view trailers and nothing ever happens.

any thoughts on the points @vicviperasks?

thanks for the great work and I know you’re beholden to Samsung but this is not a great outcome. Please advise?  Thanks. Rob.

I'll throw some other information out while we wait for a response.  These are all things conveyed in the past here which affect the speed of return.

  • You can't necessarily compare one company to another as far as the speed their apps are processed.  There are different tiers of support for which the price rises the higher you go.
  • The higher tiers can affect the speed and the age of the TVs supported also.  For instance, Samsung typically won't test the Emby app for TVs after 4 years (though Luke can do a special request once in a while for older models now).  However, the Netflix app gets updated for older models all the time because they pay for the higher tier support.  I've only had 1 store app update so far in the last 4 years on my 2018 model because my TV is no longer tested in the normal updates with the others.
  • An app update is already in the queue
  • Some apps are more complicated and will take more time to test.  The Emby app will be in the same category and tested by the same people who test Netflix, Disney+, etc.
  • Sometimes the app gets kicked back for changes.
  • You can't do an app update and add regions/countries supported at the same time.  For instance, when Emby adds South Korea to the supported countries all app testing will stop for that app.
  • Each year and model group of TV models is tested separately.  For instance, a 2025 Premium, Standard, and Basic model is tested (sometimes by different people) and can be held back for different reasons.  This is why you will sometimes see someone say their model has the update and others even within the same year don't see the update yet.
  • Holidays

Anyhow, we'll have to wait and see if Luke wants to get into the weeds on why your TV doesn't have the new app yet.  Just wanted to convey it's not always a simple comparison.

thanks for that context @FrostByteand all that makes sense.  However, those of us with *slightly* older TV (mine is a 2022 Art Frame which doesn't feel "that old" to my bank account) feel trapped as (a) we get treated like second class citizens by Samsung and (b) Samsung impose a 1 month timebomb any app that is sideloaded so we just can't win here.  I get that's not an "EMBY" fault but someone's gotta fight the fight.

I use the trailer feature a lot for my media collection and have been without this feature for what feels like a year now.

Agree with everything you said.  You might also consider looking at something that's actually geared more for streaming local media like a Shield, Cube, etc.  They usually support more codecs like TrueHD Atmos and DTSX.  I've got a Shield plugged into my soundbar, and it works pretty well.  TVs usually gear themselves toward supporting streaming services.

Anyhow, hopefully Luke can get that update pushed for you.

Hello @FrostBytecan you please help me more on this?  I'm not familiar with "Shield" as I've been a dedicated EMBY user for over a decade or two.  I use EMBY on my local PC to serve up locally stored media (movies, TV, photos etc) to my TV's across my home (via Chromecast or direct) and also to stream said content to a select number of friends with accounts on my Emby server.  So given all that, how would "Shield" help me please as I'm not familiar with it, or if it does all the same things as I just described?  I do have an ATMOS Soundbar and a 4K TV so I'm always looking to EEK out all the features of local media to match my gear.  I'm generally pretty happy with EMBY and all it does (except for the latest Movie Trailer issue that I've been asking to be fixed with 2.2.8 in the app store for New Zealand for months on end) so I'm pretty reluctant to move away from EMBY unless there is a really good reason.   Thanks for any advice.

You wouldn't be moving away from Emby because the Shield has an Emby client also.  The nVidia Shield is a very popular device amongst Emby users here which runs on Android.  The Emby Android client looks almost exactly like the Samsung client so it wouldn't be hard to use.  When plugged into the HDMI in-port on your soundbar the Shield then can play all the audio codecs which your soundbar supports and video is passed out to the TV.  No transcoding or switching audio to something lesser quality.

Shield --> HDMI IN --> Soundbar --> HDMI OUT --> Samsung TV

You can also download the Android client from the Android store or sideload it, but there is no time bomb in the Android sideloaded client like there is in the Tizen app.  The Android client has had the trailers fix for a long time both in the store and sideload.

You should be able to find the nVidia Shield on Amazon or other electronics stores there.

The Shield also supports PGS subtitles.  The only thing the Shield can't do is display HDR10+.  It just ignores HDR10+ and passes HDR10.

I have the Emby client on both the TV and Shield and use both.

The Shield also can run all the other apps you may run like, Netflix, Disney+, etc.

Just so I get this right @FrostByte(and thank you for the clarify), are you saying this Shield device essentially replaces my Windows 11 Emby Server PC that I have dedicated to this one task of running EMBY?  My Windows 11 Emby server has a number of local USB drives storing content, so I assume the Shield device has USB ports to allow me to plug in the media volumes?  Do I have that right?

No, it's not a server.  Just client.  You would still use and connect to your current server, so nothing changes there.  Just instead of running the Emby app from the TV itself the Emby app is running on a little box connected to your soundbar and the picture only is displayed on your TV.  Sort of like hooking up a UHD or BD player.

Too soon to ask for another update to the Samsung situation? I would prefer to not use a separate device just for running a more up-to-date version of Emby. Thank you!

You don't need a new device just for trailers.  If trailers are really that important load the USB version now as Luke suggested and when Samsung updates the store app fall back and use that version.

@FrostByteand @LukeI appreciate your advice, but I'll say it again, we've all "done that" (sideloaded, timebomb, sideloaded, timebomb, sideload, timebomb etc etc) and are getting a little *over* Samsungs lack of movement especially given they restrict sideload apps to 1 month.  They cant have it both ways if they want to keep loyal customers.  That's why we've been banging on to see if we can get the legit store (for me, NZ Store) nailed please.  I get it's out of your hands but surely someone can address this as it's getting very old.  Cheers

For device model years 2022 and older, the 2.2.8 update is approved and is waiting launch. So we are just waiting for Samsung to do that.

Ahhh got it thanks @FrostByte.  If it was a server to replace my Windows 11 machine with the added benefit of superior audio processing, I might consider it, but it feels like just another device I'd need to manage.  I get that might get around the very slow Tizen app issues we have as we're trying to avoid the continuous sideload issue.  Thanks for the advice.

Yippee thanks @Lukefor the update.  Any clue on how long that might take to filter down to the NZ store?  Days, weeks, months?  Cheers again Rob

I'm not aware of any region specific delay so once they launch it will be for everywhere. I don't know how long it will take. It has been in this state for several weeks now. Sometimes it's 2-3 weeks, other times a couple of months.
