Hey everyone,

First time making a server like this, I thought it would be a great idea to start working on something and load it with shows and things from my own childhood that I know would be good for kids when they come over or when I have my own.  I first started with Linux and it wasn't as easy as I thought it was so I ran back to windows seeing as I don't have the time I once did to learn a new system.  I started off with a blu-ray copy of Digimon season 1 and used makeMKV to make it into an MKV file as a test first it didn't pop out as episodes but one giant mkv.  But even so I tried testing it and came across and error "sorry this disc is authorized for play in region a" when trying to play it using the server I set up.  Anyone have any insight they can share with a newby?

People do different things. What you could try (if you haven't already), is load a disk and start MakeMKV. Click on the big image of the disk in the centre -

MakeMKVCopying20261.jpg.0bd33650d958d7017e6de29c4fc2858a.jpg

and wait for it to process. You should get something like -

MakeMKVCopying20262.jpg.fa913771e7d0ce853c7d6e3a1af71c97.jpg

Here everything is ticked but you want to untick the last item, which is likely the three episodes shown ticked above that but all stuck together. Tell it where you want to save them and then save.

You then have to identify the episodes you (hopefully) get. If you're lucky you can just play each one and wait for the name to pop up, otherwise you have to fiddle a bit more.Try to find a list of episodes and see if you can identify from different runtimes, or different directors and writers or something.

Remember for movies (and maybe episodes) you might find movies shown several times - they might be different versions (Director's Cut etc) or there may be one that has chapters and one of the same size and length the doesn't, go for the one with chapters. Sometimes, you get several versions and you just have to rip them all - think Star Wars with that opening roll disappearing into the distance, one in English one in Spanish, one in... Sometimes the MakeMKV forum has hints about which version to go for.

Also if you want a straight copy of the whole disk, start by clicking on the yellow and green highlighted icon shown in the first picture above (second icon from left) and tick on decode or decrypt option tickbox thing.

Gave it a try again, my results look a little different from the style you got.  I expanded each item and my options are extremely limited.  It looks like all the episodes are mashed up into on giant file.  Is this normal?  The below is the results I got unaltered just expanded.

I'm probably missing something obvious, but it does look, as you say, they've all been stuck together. Personally its been really rare for me - I've done disks by the hundred and have my come across less than 5.

You could always try other stuff in the meantime to check that it is indeed rare, or with this one, I've seen a few things jn Google about possible fixes, like -

If MakeMKV has given you a single combined file with chapters, it should be easy to split up using MKVToolNix.

First look at the chapter list in the chapter editor, and you should fairly easily be able to suss out the sections of each episode (e.g. prologue, opening, body, credits, preview - or some similar arrangement).  The pattern should be the same for all episodes (first and last may differ), and the times should add up to the same lengths (for broadcast shows, at least).  So you can make a list of the chapter numbers at the start of each episode.  (There is usually an extra chapter at the end containing about 1 second of nothing - you can ignore it.)

Then on the Output tab of the multiplexer set the split mode to "Before Chapters" and list the chapters starting each episode.  The actual split is very quick, as it is just copying the original file once, but changing the destination file as it goes.  A quick check to ensure your chosen boundaries were correct, and you're done (apart from naming the files properly).

I ended up doing that, took some trial and error.  Hopefully it doesn't happen with all the disks I get.  But on another note is there a way with MakeMKV to allow me make multiple MKV at the same time?  It seems this tool works great with movies, but when I go to work on different tv shows, from what I have tested I can only output 1 episode at a time then change the settings to get the next.  When looking up possibilities I see people asking about multiple "movies" at the same time which works completely different.

Am wondering what settings you would need to change between individual episodes on a disk so you can output the next one ?

That is exactly what I described.  On the output tab, select "split before chapters", add the list of chapter numbers you have worked out, e.g. "6,11,16,21,26,31" might be typical if there are seven episodes; then multiplexing the file will generate that many MKV files, and when you've got it right you delete the original single file.  The multiple files are named the same as the original with a serial number added - you'll need to name them with episode numbers to suit Emby, but if you use a file renamer you can probably save time there as well.

If you mean processing multiple combined files automatically, you'll need (a) to be confident that the chapter structure is the same on all of them, and (b) to write a simple script to call mkvmerge to process all the files in turn.

What you were describing exists on MKVToolNix, which seems to be the thing I am using to fix the blu-rays with all the chapters condensed together.  What I am talking about on the MakeMKV side is where the episodes already exist separately but there doesn't seem to be an option within MakeMKV to actually separate them all at once into their own file.

Isn't that what I showed above for Das Boot ?

Wait it already does that?  I must have misread it then, because I thought if I didn't check everything separately it would be all clumped together.  Thank you for pointing that out, I guess I am on my way to getting this media server set up.  Thanks everyone for the help.

Yes, in that example leave the first 3 checked and uncheck the 4th.
