Hello Support!

First, THANK YOU for developing and maintaining Emby Server all these years!  The layout, UI (user interface), and features are quite comprehensive!

This is likely to be a long message as I have done some research and attached the relevant files, which I'll refer to in this post.

Second, this itemized list:   🙂

[1] I have "installed" Emby Portable 4.9.1.90 using Firefox v115.30.0esr (64-bit), created the first library and reconstructed that Library, "installed" Emby Portable 4.9.2.7 beta on 64bit Windows 7

Everything works just fine except for what's implied by the title of this topic (details next)

[2] All of my MP4 | MKV | AVI files are on G:\  NO folders are used; every file at root level.  Total files reported by Emby is 2960.  Total files reported by DOS cmd is 2982

So WHY am I "missing" 22 files?  There are NO hidden files; no miscellaneous Windows files (thumb, ini, desktop, ...)

[3a] I have  "The Addams Family (1991).mp4"  "The Addams Family (2019).mkv"  "The Addams Family 2 (2021).mp4"

The 2019 file was NOT included in the Library after a few scans.  I converted the MKV file to MP4 and rescanned.  Same result - NOT found in the library.  Why not?

[3b] I have "After Life (2009).mp4" and "After Darkness (2014).mp4".  The "After Darkness..." was NOT added to the Library after a scan

(see attached "Good" and "Bad" files extracted from the "embyserver-63900131586.txt" file, also attached)

Thank you for reading this post!  I'm hopeful you can figure out why SOME files are loaded and others are not.  They play correctly, so there's no corruption.

You'll find "Process exited with code 0" after the ffprobe statement for BOTH of these entries.  In my programming experience, "code 0" typically means "OK", where as "code 1" is some kind of error!  So, if a given file can NOT be found in your sources, why is the error code a zero instead of a 1 or some other value indicating a lookup failure?  Curiously, BOTH files DO exist in IMDB, so technically there is no "error".  But the "bad" file was not added to the library.  Why not?

[4] If you compare the "Good" and "Bad" files side-by-side, you'll find there is NO indication of any error that would indicate why the "Bad" file was NOT added to the Library.  The differences found are what you'd expect: various counters and such.  As a reference, I use "DiffMerge" found here:  https://sourcegear.com/diffmerge/downloads.php  *OR*   https://www.snapfiles.com/downloads/diffmerge/dldiffmerge.html

[5] I have "Waking Ned Divine (1998).mp4" , which was hugely popular.  But Emby can't find it in IMDB??!  I ask that because Emby DID find this film, but loaded some screen image as the file's poster.  Does IMDB have a proprietary API for accessing their movie components?  Is this why your searches always start with an ffprobe lookup to TheMovieDb?

[6] I have started to compare the file listing on my G:\ drive to the Emby Library content list from  Emby > Metadata Manager > Views > Videos; All Filters = Any  VIEW = "Table", one at a time!  This is QUITE tedious, as you know!  But, so far, I have found incorrect dates in the filename and the "Title" metadata.  Once corrected from IMDB data, the movie is found with a subsequent Library scan (my G:\ drive)

I thank you, in advance, for your time on my querries!

When this happens on my server, a quick restart of the server software itself usually resolves it. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's annoying.

Hi, did you try using the duplicate filter in your movies library? That could tell you if the new movie was merged with an existing one.

Hello Luke!

!*WOW*!  Yes, all of the "missing" files are identified.  THANK YOU for pointing that out (newbie that I am to Emby!).  In one case, I have "AfterLife (2009)" and "After Life (2009)".  If I click a blank area on the  movie tile shown in the Library, the two files are then displayed vertically and separately identified in an updated browser window.  There is a button captioned, "Split Versions Apart".  I guess it doesn't matter in this case, except for wasting disk drive space. I should split the versions and then delete one of these files?  YOUR recommendation?

Regarding "After Death (2015)", I found it in the Library as a German movie, entitled, "Schrieb ich Buch nach Buch-Zum Tod von Günter Grass"  I looked at the poster in the Library display which appeared to be correct for the movie I have, and saw that the two title words were merged as one word!  Simple enough to edit that as "G:\AfterDeath (2015)" The two IMDB ID#s are tt5341330 (bad) and tt2710826 (good).  I removed a lot of the Library metadata after changing the IMDB ID# and the title... and waited for Emby to re-scan.  NOW it's there correctly in the Library!

Finally, regarding "The Addams Family", I have G:\The Addams Family (1991).mp4   and   G:\The Addams Family (2019).mp4.  Apparently, Emby ignores the "required" parentheses for the movie date syntax:  <title><space>(year).xxx ???!  Thus, the "confusion' was due to identical names.  Does Emby *NOT* check the date in the video filename when the titles are identical?  I have taken the time to duplicate the correct filename in the "Title" metadata in my G:\ files by checking IMDB for The Truth.  🙂  Sometimes the release date in MY file is off by a year.  So, I correct that in the video filename AND the metadata.  Is that required?  So, now I can "Split Versions Apart" and Emby will add the "missing" version to the library, correct??

Luke, HOW do I rename future duplicate filename occurrences so that Emby can identify AND distinguish them as separate movies AND add BOTH into the Library?   BTW, the 1991 version has human actors, with the 2019 version being an animation.

Thank you for your guidance!  I have a little more work to do to get my Library current and correct!  🙂

Additional thoughts and guidance are GREATLY appreciated!!

If you split them then you’ll just see two separate entries instead of one. That’s your decision to do or not. They are both in the library already.

Alternatively you could go to the library options and disable automatic grouping if you don’t want it at all.
