Version 4.9.1.90 update caused Library Issue

Upgraded the emby server to v4.9.1.90 on linux and now the library doesn't display  movies as expected as *all* previous versions did. 

Have existing movie added to library for example:

Hot.Shots.1991.avi  - added to the library 4 years ago on 1/1/2021

If i add a new version of the same movie (maybe a better quality one) like

Hot.Shots.1991.1080p.mkv - added on 12/1/2025

The library doesn't show the new movie. It seems Emby is automatically grouping movies (which is good and nice), but it doesn't take into consideration the date scanned into the library OR the file creation date. It only uses the date of the oldest movie in the grouping which is very undesirable because it hides new movies that you added to your library. If you sort by date added when viewing your movies, you want to see the most recent movies, even if they are grouped, you want to see the most recent movie in the list.

When i view the library which is sorted by Date Added, the newest movies that i added are not showing up. When i looked deeper at the problem, the movies that don't show up are movies that are automatically grouped. If i search for the movie, i can find it and see the different version and the movie was indeed added to the library. It's the sorting by Date Added that doesn't work with movie groupings if you have a grouping with one movie which was added a long time ago and another movie that was added recently.

Yes when you sort by date added, it uses the max value from the group. we will have to look at whether or not it makes sense to change this to the min value. thanks.

just my two cents, i think it should follow the sort order.

So if you want to see the newest media in your library, it should use the min value else if you want to see the oldest movies in your library, it should use the max value. I would just treat the group as a single movie, but like you said, choose the min or max value based on the sort order. That would be ideal. 

 

As it is now, it's impossible to see what the new movies are in your library and personally, it's probably the most used aspect of Emby for deciding what to watch.

@LukeHave you guys decided if this is going to be fixed? It's turned into a show stopper for my media library. It drastically diminishes the usefulness of Emby. If you upgrade the quality of a movie and want to watch it, it's not easily found unless you manually search. The majority of time when looking for a movie to watch, you sort the newest addition to your library.

Previously, EMBY didn't cause problems when you had multiple versions of a media file. For instance, if you have a movie and you had the 480p, 1080p and 4k version, EMBY use to have 3 separate entries in the library for you to choose from. The current version of EMBY is collapsing each version into a single entry in the library and you have to manually choose which version you want to play. that's fine but It should default to the highest resolution when you go to watch the item. I can't imagine why that would not be the default case. You would want to give the user the best possible viewing experience. The reason why you might add a 480p is if you are viewing your library over a slow connection, or on a low resolution device, but allow the user to manually make the call to choose a lower resolution file instead of defaulting to it. 

 

I reported this problem almost 9 months ago and there still is not a fix. This seems like a basic fix caused by a regression in the newest releases. It makes EMBY almost not useable when you have a large library and are constantly adding to it. Is supporting users with large and growing libraries not a priority?

Hi, one thing you could do is disable the automatic grouping options on the library. That should make things equivalent to how they were before for you.
