heffeque 78 Posted October 16, 2025 Posted October 16, 2025 (edited) Quick question... Tone mapping doesn't work with Dolby Vision, correct? Asking because tone mapping on Emby doesn't seem to work on my DS918+ with videos like "Dolby Vision - Blocks" (see HERE) even on 4.8 (also waiting for 4.9 to be a bit more stable). Colors are totally wrong (purple and green instead of normal colors). I have videos that have both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ (simultaneously), and they seem to work OK (I'm guessing that Emby is ignoring Dolby Vision, falling back to HDR10+, and tone mapping that data). If tone mapping on Dolby Vision is supposed to work on 4.8, I can provide logs. I can also provide logs for Dolby Vision + HDR10+ videos working as expected. I don't have any standalone HDR10+ videos. Correction, I do have a couple of HDR10+ videos, and they seem to be losing the dynamic metadata part. Example file: https://archive.org/download/hdr10test_lake_2021_02_01 On Emby all loops look the same (whilst when using PotPlayer I actually see changes on my SDR screen). Interestingly enough, VLC also fails to reproduce Dolby Vision and HDR10+ correctly, and MPC-HC reproduces Dolby Vision, but the dynamic range of HDR10+ is missing. Only PotPlayer seems to be doing everything correctly. Let me know what would work best for you. Edited October 16, 2025 by heffeque
softworkz 5066 Posted October 16, 2025 Posted October 16, 2025 @heffeque - I've split out your question. It was off-topic and the wrong forum
heffeque 78 Posted October 16, 2025 Author Posted October 16, 2025 Sorry about that. Was trying things out to see what logs I could send you, and ended up checking further than originally intended. 1
Lessaj 467 Posted October 16, 2025 Posted October 16, 2025 Dolby Vision Profile 5 (pure DV) cannot be transcoded. 1
heffeque 78 Posted October 16, 2025 Author Posted October 16, 2025 How about HDR10+? There's tone mapping going on, but dynamic metadata seems to be ignored (though that might be asking a bit too much seeing that neither MPC-HC nor VLC seem to get that right).
