Troubles with Subtitles

I'm a new Emby user, having migrated from another platform. So far, things have gone well. I like it. What brings me to the forum is intermittent display of subtitles. Sometimes they work. Sometimes they don't. I've read some of the forums and implemented some changes.

  • I changed from OpenSubtitles.org to OpenSubtitles.com. The account is current.
  • I downloaded .srt files and put them in the same folder as the videos files.
  • I tried three different versions of the same problematic episodes: 2160p with and without DoVi, and a 1080p version.
  • I purchased a premium account.
  • Subtitles work normally on other devices and software using the same video. I tested on an Android phone, on Windows computers, and Plex.
  • The problem only occurs on our Roku Ultra. It's the new Roku Ultra and its software is up to date.
    • All devices are on the same local network.
    • The Roku has a dedicated 5G WiFi connection that tests at 190 Mbps.
  • I rebooted every device and all of them are up to date.
  • Subtitles work on the same Roku for every other streaming app I've tested, including those sourced from the internet.

I think that's just about everything I've tried, and there has been no change. I haven't yet tried transcoding because I haven't had time to read the help file yet. (I'll do that soon.) The confounding aspect is the subtitles worked for E01 and E03, but don't work for E02 and E04. (I haven't tried E05 yet.) What's troublesome is how they only work some of the time.

Now, I can't think of anything else to try, so I'm asking for help. I'll work on the transcoding part, but it seems to me if it works for some videos in the same series, it should work for all of them. At least, that seems reasonable to me.

I remembered that I have an older Roku Ultra on another computer. Subtitles work as they should on that device.

I have thus narrowed the problem down to only one device... The newest Roku Ultra:

  • Model 4850X - Ultra
  • Software version: 14.6

Sorry about the newbie mistake.

A log file that includes the problem is attached.

Other information:

  • Exactly what you were doing and what happened.  Include the name of whatever you played if it is a playback problem
    • I was attempting to watch episodes of the "Foundation" season three.
  • The time you sent the log (in Eastern Time please - UTC -5).
    • It was 3:00 PM
  • The name of the Emby user on the local server that was logged in at the time
    • I only have one user: Karla

I may have found a solution. In "Playback Settings" for the problem video, I selected "Attempt Playback Correction" and the subtitles appeared.

I saw that before, but didn't associate it with subtitles because the video itself plays flawlessly, and it played okay with every version of the same episode no matter how it was encoded.

So, sorry to take this to the forum. I thought I tried everything, but evidently I hadn't. Thanks.
