phlinh 0 Posted October 8, 2025 Posted October 8, 2025 Synology upcoming DSM 7.3 will deactivate transcoding. I have the DS1019+ which has Intel chipset with hardware transcoding. Will Emby still be able to access the hardware chip for transcoding?
JohnWhitmore 28 Posted October 8, 2025 Posted October 8, 2025 (edited) Might be this article - but it references DSM 7.2.2??? How to Get Plex/Jellyfin Hardware Transcoding BACK on Your Synology NAS – NAS Compares Edited October 8, 2025 by JohnWhitmore added link - DOH!!!
Bims0n 14 Posted October 8, 2025 Posted October 8, 2025 Apparently only valid for their newest gen of line as the DS225+ and DS425+, according to one of the first lines in the article. Might not be valid for older models.
JonArbuckle 10 Posted October 8, 2025 Posted October 8, 2025 All Synology NAS x25 (225, 425, 925) have disabled HW-transcoding. Has nothing to do with synology update 7.3. The github can reactivate hw transcoding. There, you have to check if it's still working for 7.3

There, you have to check if it's still working for 7.3 Correct, the Intel versions of x25 can have HW-transcoding activated by re-enabling the driver: https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/1o15zz9/someone_finally_cracked_hw_transcoding_on_x25/ Version 7.3 doesn't change HW-transcoding capabilities compared to what was already changed in 7.2 (basically removing h.265 from their own apps, but the driver is still there, so Emby can use HW-transcoding). It's just that Synology's release notes are trash. 3
aVe2000 13 Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 (edited) from the release notes 7.3: Quote Introduced in DSM 7.2.2 and continued in DSM 7.3, media file processing for HEVC (H.265), AVC (H.264), and VC-1 codecs is now handled by end devices to improve system efficiency. These codecs are widely supported on end devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart TVs. If the end device does not support the required codecs, the use of media files may be limited. Refer to this article for workarounds. In addition, please note the following exceptions: Surveillance Station on DSM will continue to support server-side processing of AVC (H.264) streams, see the release notes. Deep Video Analytics (DVA) series models and VisualStation clients will retain support for AVC (H.264) and HEVC (H.265) codecs. Edited October 10, 2025 by aVe2000
heffeque 78 Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 That doesn't contradict what I wrote... It actually just states what I already confirmed. DSM 7.2 removed h.265 support from Synology's 1st party apps (leaving it available for 3rd party apps, such as Emby), and the x25 series had the HW driver disabled (it can be re-enabled) regardless of the DSM version. So no news.
Lurikbolding 0 Posted October 11, 2025 Posted October 11, 2025 Hello I have a 918+ with DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 4. Is something to check to know if the hardware transcoding is ON or OFF? I read the log and i found lot of informations but i'm not sure to understand. - Hardware Detection : i don't see the result - Info CodecManager: CodecList : is this list from hardware or software codec list?
