brothom 177 Posted September 30, 2025 Posted September 30, 2025 (edited) I just got some reports of basically all my users complaining my server being sluggish. I immediately noticed all of them transcoding, even if they didn't have to. Checkimg the Emby Web settings I noticed that "Remote streaming quality" was set to "1080p" and these users were all streaming a 4K video on their 4K tv which I had previously check was set to quality 4K 200 mbps. Could it be that the "automatic quality" has been reset from the server/Emby side? I can't imagine it being incidental that all of my users suddenly have this issue and have to set their quality to highest again to prevent unnecessary transcoding. Luke 42077 Posted September 30, 2025 Posted September 30, 2025 Quote Could it be that the "automatic quality" has been reset from the server/Emby side? No. Maybe something caused their app data to get cleared, or maybe they just changed the setting.

Its weird tho, 3 different users all reverted back and so did the settings under Emby Web in the backend. Isn't that too many coincidence?

Emby Web Settings -> Playback -> Video -> Remote streaming quality The settings on this page are described as "These settings apply to all users playing on this device.", does that mean all users that use 'this device' or does 'this device' refer to the server? I thought there was also a way to set the preferred quality for each user instead of having to log into their device and set it there?
Solution Luke 42077 Posted October 1, 2025 Solution Posted October 1, 2025 That means the device they are playing from. Those settings were never per user. That little help text blurb was added to help clarify that.

brothom 177 Posted October 1, 2025 Author Posted October 1, 2025 (edited) @Lukeafter some additional investigation I see my server is now updated to 4.9.1.80. I've also noticed that my "Movies" library suddenly had no metadata providers selected anymore. Could that and the above be a result of the update? I'm also confused because despite this version being indicated, the ebook functionality doesn't seem to be added either. Addendum My server already contained books, but the player becomes available ONLY when the book has a cover image AND when it is re-identified. New entries seem to be working fine. --- I'll mark this thread closed as the rest of my observations are related to the 4.9.1.80 update. Edited October 1, 2025 by brothom
Luke 42077 Posted October 1, 2025 Posted October 1, 2025 It probably is a result of the update although I’m not why. I would just reconfigure them.
