Passwords for Emby; Emby Connect, My Emby Server, Other Emby Access

I'm new to Emby and still trying to understand how it all works, with the ultimate goal of being able to explain it to my remote users. I've added a user that lives in this household and have been trying to connect as her, from her iPad using her credentials, email address, etc.

I am trying to help her connect to Emby Connect as that seems the easiest way to access my emby server regardless of her location (in the home, LAN or outside the home, WAN) however something seems messed up.  I can't seem to enter her password correctly, and wonder if something got messed up in the authentication process? She seems to be locked out now.

I see in my server that I can change her password - is that anything to do with the password she would use for Emby Connect? I also can't change her email adddress as Emby now has it memorized as belonging to her. What do I do?

Hi, the authentication on your server and the authentication for Emby Connect are two different things. It's probably best to take a moment to get to know the difference:

Emby Connect

Once you have a feel for Emby Connect, then you'd decide if you want to use it or not. Once you've decided, then that will determine the credentials that she will use as well as what screen she will enter them into.

In short, Emby Connect saves her the trouble from having to know your remote server ip address, as well as having to reconfigure it whenever it changes. However if you know that it will never change, then you may find it simpler to not use Emby Connect.

Hmm.. well I thought I did have a "feel" for it as I set up myself and one other person successfully with access, but now I seem to have trouble with this one user.  Is there a way to force Emby Connect to forget an email address for a user so she can start the process again?

Is Emby connect "smart" in the sense it knows if the user is "inside" and should connect via the LAN address or "outside" (remote) and knows it should connect via the WAN address?

Again,

Thanks

If you believe she has a password issue, you can direct her to reset her Emby Connect password here: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/lostpassword/

If you would like to re-link her local user account with her Emby Connect email:

  • Remove the email address, hit Save.

  • Re-enter the email address, hit Save.

You should see a popup indicating the account has been successfully linked.

Your router should do this if it supports loopback connections.

Yes it is.

We've tried the password reset thing maybe 2-3 hours ago, and had no email checking to be sure she had requested the reset and the instructions for next steps.

We did get this response after requesting the password reset...

"If we were able to find an account for the email address supplied, an email will be sent with further instructions to recover your account. Check your email within the next few minutes, including any junk or spam folders. If you do not receive an email within the next few minutes, please verify the information supplied and try again."

We entered her email address very carefully.  How long should we wait?  How many times should we request the reset? If no email comes in response to the password reset request, what would be the next step?

Thank-you very much for your patience.

Obvious question, but did you initially get her to click the green button here to "SIGN UP" to Emby Connect in the first place?

This step is required in addition to you adding a local user for this person on your server and then linking the two with the email address used during registration.

Thanks folks!  I found a missed validation email inside her Gmail Junk folder. I suppose the system holds your details while it waits for you to validate your registration - eventually it releases the hold assuming you changed your mind. That allowed her to re-register with her email address and this time we found the validation email (and the old validation email).

I'm very grateful for your patience with me.  Sorry about that.

  • Thanks 1
