RickPaq 4 Posted April 10, 2025 Posted April 10, 2025 Closed captioning works fine on Nvidia Shield and on my MacBook and Windows. It also works fine on my older Google TV dongles using the version with the Icon labeled "Emby Android TV" I purchased a NEW Google TV dongle and installed Emby. But I notice the Icon only says "Emby," so it's a different version. The closed captioning doesn't work at all on that version. How can I install the previous version of Emby on my new Google TV dongle? Closed captioning is just not an option for people with hearing issues. It's a necessity Closed captioning was also never fixed on Samsung phones either. Actually on the phones (we have several), you'll see a glimpse of closed captioning on the edges, behind the video itself so it's as if it's not coming to the foreground over the actual video. That may be the same issue with your new version. On the Roku, closed captioning also fails. It fills the screen with repetitious closed captions just once and it never changes. This is a critical feature for us. Thank you.
Solution RickPaq 4 Posted April 11, 2025 Author Solution Posted April 11, 2025 That was the problem. I noticed all of my other Google TV's had version 2.1.23G, where the closed captioning worked, but I had installed a much newer version on my new Google TV from the playstore. I went back to the playstore and noticed there were actually 2 Emby apps to choose from. One was labeled "Emby for Android" and the other just "Emby." I removed the newer Emby version and installed "Emby for Android," the 23G version and that fixed my closed captioning issue. Odd that there were 2 versions in playstore. I wasn't expecting that. But I'm happy now! And you should be aware that Emby is the ONLY product that can add closed captioning to my entire library of really old .TP video files that were recorded by Beyond TV almost 10 years ago. That product NEVER had closed captioning support. So it's a huge benefit to me that Emby can caption those old files. All all you do is just include the remote drives into Emby's library. No organization is required, just sort them and play them as you wish. Obviously it's pulling the captioning out of the file itself, but no other product, including Plex (I've abandoned) can do this. Many other products require you to re-organize video's into separate folders. Imagine trying to do that with over 10,000 video's. Emby doesn't require that. Emby also streams remotely, easily and smoothly with no fiddling. Plex could NEVER master that. I still don't have closed captioning on my Samsung Note 20, but actually the captioning IS there, but it's behind the video layer instead of in the foreground. Every once in a while you can see the captioning on the edges behind the video. But I'm really happy I found that older version. Closed captioning is a requirement for our household. Thank you! Rick
