[Xbox Series X] Emby transcoding HEVC/EAC3 but Plex doesn't

Hey all,

I've just switched from Plex to Emby and am having issues playing any HEVC content where it gets transcoded. When trying to play the same file via Plex on the same client hardware (Xbox Series X) I get direct play. Looking at the Emby log I see the video codec isn't supported: TranscodeReasons=VideoCodecNotSupported. I'm not sure why this is the case when it's supported on Plex? I've looked around and have seen that audio codec and subtitles can cause transcoding - I'm not using any subs and I don't see any errors relating to audio codec. It looks like it may be being transcoded to AC3 - Stream #0:1 -> #0:1 (eac3 (native) -> ac3 (native)) - but I'm not sure if this is causing the issue despite the video codec error. I do have a 7.1 system that I'm passing through to via eARC. If anyone could point me in the right direction as to what to look at/test it would be much appreciated.

Hey, welcome to Emby!

Unfortunately this behavior is due to some rather silly software licensing/review with Microsoft.

You can however Join the holiday bonanza! (there's an option for it in the settings of the xbox app). It'll fix the problem for you until things can get back on their usual path.

Ah, that makes sense. I've just entered now, if I only I had done it a few hours ago before the last draw, oh well. Thanks heaps for the heads up - I presume it's account wide and I don't have to enter on both my xboxs?

Na, just the one entry per xbox live account.
