TolkienBard 58 Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 For roughly the last month or so, I have found that media scans are missing new media as it gets added. Usually, a forced re-scan solves the problem. However, that is not the case with audio books. I converted my Audible library to put it on the server as Emby is, frankly, more reliable for streaming my titles. The first batch of titles converted and were scanned into the library without a hitch. But now, as I add new titles, the library scan is not picking them up. I can navigate to the title using file explorer, but the library scan refuses to see it. I thought maybe for some reason the title was not being seen as "new", but a re-scan did not produce the entry and it does not show up in the metadata manager. In short, for some reason, scans of my audiobook folder are not finding new additions, even with manual re-scan. I deleted a book and tried to re-add immediately prior to creating this so whatever is happening will show up in the log. I am quite at a loss why this one library is not behaving. embyserver.txt
Luke 42078 Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Hi there, can you please provide a specific example? Thanks.
TolkienBard 58 Posted December 2, 2024 Author Posted December 2, 2024 Sure, I tried adding Jim Butcher's Codex Alera, Book 2: Academ's Fury. I place it in the following path: E: Audio Books/Jim Butcher/Academ's Fury But, when I do a library scan, that book does not show up, despite being in the appropriate library folder. Spoiler
TolkienBard 58 Posted December 8, 2024 Author Posted December 8, 2024 I've tried adding the various titles again. I even converted them to a new format just to see if that made a difference, despite older titles still being in the .m4b format. Still no joy. Since the library scan simply is not picking up the new additions, I am unable to play them using Emby, since there is no way for me to manually enter all the data (Which would be a PITA, but at least would be a workaround).
Luke 42078 Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 @TolkienBardhow many Emby libraries have you created, and what folder paths are added to each one?
TolkienBard 58 Posted December 13, 2024 Author Posted December 13, 2024 I have the following main library folders Adult (standard movie hierarchy of E: Adult/Movie Folder/Movie.mkv) Anime Movies (standard movie hierarchy of E: Anime Movies/Movie Folder/Movie.mkv) Anime Series (standard television hierarchy of E: Anime Series/Series Folder/Season Folder/Show Title s#e#.mkv) Audio Books (standard audio hierarchy of E: audio Books/Author Folder/Book Folder/Title.m4b) Camera Uploads (Currently empty) Collections (the standard Emby folder) Concerts (standard movie hierarchy of E: Concerts/Concert Folder/Concert.mkv) Family Folder (sorted by title and/or date - this is not really used much except as a backup library for family events) Hentai (standard movie hierarchy of E: Hentai/Movie Folder/Movie.mkv) Movies (standard movie hierarchy of E: Movies/Movie Folder/Movie.mkv) Music (standard hierarchy of E: Music/Artist Folder/Album Folder/Tracks) Playlists (The Emby default) Television (E: Television/Show Folder/Season Folder/Title s#e#.mkv) That makes for 13 different library folders and I use standard notation for naming and sorting.
Luke 42078 Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 OK that's odd. Where are you looking in the user interface for it?
TolkienBard 58 Posted December 13, 2024 Author Posted December 13, 2024 First move was to simply open the audio book library and to search Jim Butcher and then Academ's Fury. That didn't work. I tried using the search feature and simply entered the title. It did not show up. I then exited out of the Emby app and used the browser and still came up with nothing. Using the browser also allowed me to access the metadata manager. When I open the file path in the metadata manager, the title does not show up, suggesting that the library scanner never found it, despite a manual scan of the library.
TolkienBard 58 Posted December 18, 2024 Author Posted December 18, 2024 I decided to move on, figuring I would just address the issue once I finished my project. Except, I just added another author with 14 titles and none of them are populating either. With a few hundred authors and books, I'm going to have quite the hodgepodge of titles not populating if I decide to press on without figuring out what the issue is here.
Carlo 4561 Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Hi, Have you checked the specific file permissions to make sure Emby has access to them? It sounds to me like Emby doesn't know the exist. Carlo
TolkienBard 58 Posted December 18, 2024 Author Posted December 18, 2024 As best I can tell, there is nothing different with regard to permissions or security for these titles than there is from the ones added previously, all of which are showing up just fine.
Luke 42078 Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 HI, did you check your emby user parental controls? Is there anything you might have configured to cause the content to become restricted?
TolkienBard 58 Posted January 4, 2025 Author Posted January 4, 2025 I have never messed with parental controls as I have a fairly mature household. As for the configuration, I ripped my books this last time using the same presets I did for the first batch (the batch that was found before all this started).
Luke 42078 Posted January 4, 2025 Posted January 4, 2025 Quote I have never messed with parental controls as I have a fairly mature household. Hi ,can you please take a look at it though, just in case, and let us know what you find? Thanks !
TolkienBard 58 Posted January 8, 2025 Author Posted January 8, 2025 The maximum allowed parental rating is blank. Tag restriction mode is set to blocking items with tags, with no tags having been created.
TolkienBard 58 Posted January 29, 2025 Author Posted January 29, 2025 On a further update, I created a new library folder for my audio books. I then populated it with a handful of authors, but not my entire library. Then, running a library scan I came up with... nothing. For whatever reason, my audio books are not being recognized and it is becoming a bigger and bigger problem as I now have nearly 100 more books to add than I did when I began this project. I'm probably only a year or so away from audio books being my largest library - assuming I can get the server to start seeing them again.
Luke 42078 Posted March 6, 2025 Posted March 6, 2025 @TolkienBardsince you're on windows, can you try spinning up a separate portable install and see how things compare on a fresh setup? You can download the portable server here: https://emby.media/windows-server.html Thanks !
TolkienBard 58 Posted March 13, 2025 Author Posted March 13, 2025 Sorry it took so long to respond. Sometimes life comes so fast that this sort of thing has to take a back seat for a few days or even a week. I will attempt to do a clean install test on portable server this weekend.

HI, that would be great. Thanks !
Solution TolkienBard 58 Posted August 4, 2025 Author Solution Posted August 4, 2025 The solution has been found! This is something so simple it should never have taken a year to figure it all out. When using Libation in order to liberate books from one's Audible or other library, it is important to go into the settings section and to un-tick a single box Settings>Download/Decrypt>Set cover art as the folder's icon If that box is checked, Emby's library search will not find the new material. If the box is unchecked, it will work as intended. 1
