Erik 124 Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 Hello, With the Beta of HexOS launched and containing plex already, I was wondering if Emby had plans to support HexOS (based on TrueNAS) as well? I am looking at it being a option for my custom server to move off windows and not have a separate Synology device as I had been previously pondering) @Luke Thank! Erik 1
Neminem 1518 Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 @Erik Try unraid, and build you own nas. Unraid | Unleash Your Hardware Cyber weekend stops in 17 Hours.

Hi, I have a variation of pre-built NAS and DIY servers at various locations. I use Synology for critical data for example. However, the 4 Emby servers are all on Windows 10 at the moment and that is what I am looking at moving to a different OS here in the future. From some reading, I don't want my servers running of USB sticks as unraid does and was looking at TrueNAS. Aside from my own preferences, its also a question for the Emby Devs because if it launches with Plex available (its already in the beta), then I would think Emby would like to be there as well to grow the community.

Erik I believe that if Plex is doing something there must be some fairly major problem with it. Like running a server on the Shield Plex did it by being included with the OS and Emby tried it following Plex and both servers have major problems. Plex is the pioneer of stupid failures.

No disagreement about plex. i tried it once years ago when I found Emby (when it was media browser) and that lasted a day. its not integrated, but an installable app to the HexOS OS (it’s running on TrueNAS as the BE system, but with a much easier UI it seems). either way, I purchased a lifetime licence of HexOS on a gamble that it may be a good product (cheap enough on Black Friday initial beta launch sale that if I lose out it’s not a big deal). If the Emby decides to support it, I will has a machine spooled up to test it out.
Luke 42077 Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 Hi, if it's powered by TrueNAS then can't you use our existing packages for that?

I am not sure to be honest as it seems to be installed through their UI from the information I have. I just purchased a license so I am waiting to install it. There is a thread on their forum for App requests, with several others requesting they add Emby. 1

Isn't TrueNAS moving away from K8S and over to Docker? Not sure what the status of TrueNAS, HexOS and Emby are now, but support for HexOS would be great! I've bought three licenses as there are some cool features I'm looking forward to try (for instance two way remote backup with encryption). I am also considering UnRAID, but need to test a bit more. I like the feature to just add disks, but I had a problem last time I tried that you need at least two GPUs to run VMs. Unsure if that still is an issue as I only have (newer) iGPUs, but this might have been a problem on TrueNAS as well, so probably a problem in HexOS too. Still waiting to get access to try HexOS. Edited December 3, 2024 by FredrikT 1
Solution hexos_jon 10 Posted December 14, 2024 Solution Posted December 14, 2024 (edited) Hi all! Jon from Eshtek here, creators of HexOS! Saw this post and just wanted to comment. I definitely see us supporting Emby as a curated app on our platform. In the meantime, savvy users can drop to the TrueNAS UI to manually configure Emby through docker. It is true that TrueNAS dropped k8s as of the electric eel release in favor of docker. On 12/3/2024 at 7:42 AM, FredrikT said: Still waiting to get access to try HexOS. I have at least 5 sites I will move from other OS/Storage setups to HexOS in the near future. @hexos_jon will HexOS support GPU's for Emby as well? I am not familiar with trueNAS/Emby integration. 1

We can support gpus for Plex so I would assume we could do the same for Emby. I'll reach out here again when we are ready to curate and we can talk more details. Any guidance you guys could provide when we get to that point would be awesome. Thanks guys!! 3

Any updates @hexos_jon? Also - will you support auto update of Emby (/apps)? And can we do gpu hw acceleration with just one gpu (iGPU)?
hexos_jon 10 Posted March 7, 2025 Posted March 7, 2025 Hi there! Still a little ways out yet as we continue to build out our platform, but I haven't forgotten this. We have a new blog post going live tomorrow that has an updated roadmap and the big section to look at will be our App Curation Templating System. This should greatly increase the speed at which we will be able to curate additional apps for HexOS, including Emby. As far as your other questions: 1) Updating Emby will be as simple as updating the container. We haven't decided if we want to do "auto-updates" just yet, but we probably will. We can snapshot app directories before updates to give you a way to "roll back" if an update breaks something, so auto-updates become less "scary" in that setting. 2) Not entirely sure just yet. Because we are using a Docker container, in theory you could pass it the display device for the purpose of doing this, but I'm 100% theorizing here. I haven't deployed Emby or configured GPU-based transcoding for it. We're still experimenting with Intel ARC GPUs on Plex and haven't even touched iGPU support just yet. All of that being said, home media servers are a primary use case for us, so supporting all that the app can do is something we will strive for. 1
hexos_jon 10 Posted November 20, 2025 Posted November 20, 2025 Hey all! Sorry for the long delay on our side. We've been hard at work on getting our app curation and templating system built. That recently launched at the end of Q3 and we have expanded the team to curate even more apps in an upcoming update. I've included Emby on the short list for that update which should be coming in December! Thanks again for your patience and I look forward to experimenting more with Emby myself very soon!! 3
