Can't get Emby Server to work on Synology DS223.

My plan was to replace WD Mycloud Ex2 Ultra media server with a new Synology DS 223 box. The Mycloud uses the Emby media server.

Got the Synology running loaded my data with NFS as the file Server. Mounted the drive on my ubuntu 22.04 system and tested the drive with VLC. All the file permissions were good allowing me to create or delete files with two accounts.

I then installed the Emby server, configured the share folders and …. nothing worked. Emby could not see video files in sub folders. Hit the support forums, watched YouTube videos, removed Emby and reinstalled. Now, I can see the video files but when I select it for viewing I get a “No compatible streams are currently available.” message. Log files suggest the file permissions are wrong, everything looks good, e.g vlc works, owner, group, and permissions look OK.

I have spent three days fiddling with the Synology box and Emby app with no luck at getting this combo

You have Emby installed on the Synology correct?
Did you set access rights on content locations for the "internal emby" user and group"?

For security and best practices, Emby has access to its installation and subdirectories. To access content locations or other paths (temp  transcode, meta, cache, recording areas,, etc ) you need to set permissions for the internal Emby which is used to run Emby.

Yes to both questions.

Your server log is 90% permission-denied errors.

file:/volume1/Public/Shared Music/Madonna/Dont cry for me Argentina.mp3: Permission denied

Have you checked the actual files ownership and group ownership?

Yes I have with everything I can.  Ssh shows the group as users with the owner as 1001.  Both owner and group have read write.

NFS sets the permissions.  I can read and write via ubuntu file Mgr.  I can play videos with VLC.  I installed Plex and it worked as expected.

Hi, regarding permissions, have you taken a look at this guide?
