TV show was correctly IDENTIFIED; season 1 episodes were out of order

I am reporting this as an odd "bug", but I don't expect there is a resolution you might be able to propose, since Emby is relying on an outside source for the information.

I found the "Columbo" series on DVD for a good price, so I got it & converted them all to MP4, titled them "Columbo - S#E# - Show Title".  I created a folder structure "Columbo">Season # (1-10) and put the proper episodes in their respective season folders.  The show was correctly IDENTIFIED by Emby, with correct metadata (Episode title, description & image), EXCEPT:

For some reason, the order of episodes in season 1 was not correct.  The titles IDENTIFIED did not match the titles in the file name.  I went to IMDB and verified that the file name order was correct, and not the IDENTIFIED order.

I thought, perhaps, that Emby might have used a different database, so I copied the IMDB title number, went back to Emby & clicked "REMOVE IDENTIFICATION" for the show, then clicked "IDENTIFY" and put in the IMDB title number (since IMDB had the correct episode order).  The show re-identified, but the season 1 episode order was the same (incorrect).  Fortunately, all the other seasons seem to be ordered correctly.

Since there were only 6 episodes in season 1, I was able to manually edit the metadata to match the show titles using cut & paste.  A bit of a pain, but not too strenuous.  I am just curious how such a disordering could have occurred, since I gave Emby the IMDB show title number with the correct order.

Any thoughts?

Nothing ever comes from IMDB (cost-prohibitive), IMDBId is used only for lookup/match at online providers db (TVDB, TMDB, OMBDApi...). 

In your particular case, TVDB (likely your TV shows library preferred meta-provider) doesn't list desired order neither under Aired order nor DVD order (and Aired order is what you get by default and what was downloaded, hence the occurrence/"disorder" observed). 

However, TMDB does. 

In order to grab correct metadata, you should put TMDB on top of your library preferred meta-downloaders, Refresh Metadata>Replace all or re-Identify, lock the item afterwards, revert TVDB on top.

Interesting.  If TMDB is expected to give better data, why not leave it on top all the time?

I went through all the segments in Emby settings, but could not find where to select the order of databases to use for metadata.  Where would I find that?

That "better data" is debatable: some users prefer TVDB, some prefer TMDB. You'll likely find occurrences that one provider has preferred data and occurrences that the other one has it. It's quite individual. Generally, I'd still say that TVDB is better for shows (though TMDB has progressed lately) while TMDB is better for movies. But there's nothing preventing you to experiment/set it as you see fit.

Edit desired library, "Metadata Downloaders" section, you can enable/disable and reorder meta-providers as per your preferrence (order of priority is top-to-bottom one).

OK.  I found where the DBs can be selected & ordered.  I went to the TV library & found that TVDB is already at the top of all the lists (Series, season & episode Metadata Downloaders).  In the Movie library, I moved TMDB to the top.  Since TVDB was already on top in the TV library, I guess that is as good as it gets.  I suppose I could try moving TMDB up & see if I get better results, but so far, it was only one season of one show, and I corrected the issue manually already.  It is just a bit disappointing that the "source" information can be incorrect like that.  I guess this is another case of "you get what you pay for" & this is free.

You mentioned "cost prohibitive".  I imagine Emby must pay a royalty to extract the data from their database.  Might it be possible for an individual to pay for an IMDB subscription, or does it have to be "hard wired" into the Emby software?

It's more that their identifiers for media (like tt0078723) are pretty universal, and match to media on most other meta providers sites.   The tt0078723 identifier should be searchable on TMDB and TVDB.....and all three sites will say its the same movie.

Not always. It's true that tmdb and tvdb both support lookup via imdb, however for any given title there is the possibility that they won't have the value in their database, so when you try to search by imdb id you end up with no results.

It's not better or worse but rather it is pros and cons vs tvdb. usually, for most users, tvdb is the best choice for TV content. Obviously there are always exceptions to the rule though.
