External subtitles are not showing

My library has tons of external subtitles placed alongside the respective video files in the directories.

Emby is not showing these subtitles as available when starting playback, and the icon to enable them isn't there during playback either.

It seems this is an issue with external subtitles because there are some video files in my library I haven't processed yet that have embedded subtitles; these appear as expected.

Server restart didn't help. Re-scanning library files didn't either. embyserver.txt log doesn't say anything about errors accessing them, but here it is anyway https://pastebin.com/kE6xT63b

Not sure when this starting happening, though it's definitely recent (I'd say within at most the last two weeks I recall watching something with external subtitles without a problem).

Do you have the subtitles named correctly to match the media file and in the same directory?

mymovie (2022) - 720P.mkv
mymovie (2022) - 720P.en.srt

mymovie (2022) - 720P.fr.default.ass
and so on...

Thanks for the response. Yes, I followed these naming conventions, as shown in my first screenshot.

Appears to work just fine.  Not that I agree with the number naming scheme.

I'm glad it's working for you, but I've provided proof it's not working for me, hence why I've come here for help.

As for your opinions about my naming format, you're entitled to them.

Probably need to see a debug log for another example when subs were added.

example

2024-10-13 08:42:26.697 Debug LibraryMonitor: Change detected to E:\Media\TV Shows - DB\12 Monkeys (2015)\12 Monkeys Season 2\02.eng.default.ass

But would assume you Refreshing metadata on that item should work also as it will recheck them media.

But this log does not help as it does not show the import of the media only playing of said media.

True but will not work in all situations.  But hey all we can do is advise you of something that will not always work.

The "naming convention" matter is not relevant to my support issue. Please start a new thread of your own if you'd like to discuss that. Thank you.

I will attempt this in a few minutes and see what happens. Thank you for the suggestion.

Try changing media and sub filenames to:

12 Monkeys S02E02.mkv
12 Monkeys S02E02.en.default.ass

Avoid filenames starting with 0 and just a number.  See if that helps.
Double check that the .ass file looks normal.  Open it in a text editor.  A lot of online subtitle files are stored in a compressed version that works for the website, but is not compatible.

Also on TV shows, you have to go to the actual episode page to see the subtitle options.  Default should turn it on automatcially as long as the .ass file is in the correct format.  Otherwise, format errors will cause the file to just be ignored.

Using Debug Logging I observed errors about failing to save NFO files (metadata saver), 'Access Denied' - there was a permissioning issue with the storage directory I'm using that appears to have affected subtitle detection. Running a full library scan now to be sure, but based on tests I expect my issue has been fixed. If not I'll update this thread then.

Subtitle file contents, file naming, and everything else are fine.

Thank you.
