Will Emby work if I'm offgrid?

Emby works fine if you are not connected to the internet. However, if you use premier features you will lose them if Emby cannot authenticate.

Will depend on the client you want to use.

But as mentioned all non premiere functions fine.

The client will be the tv connected to the computer that runs emby via hdmi cable.

It will work perfectly fine that way. You just access it using http:/:localhost:8096 I believe unless you have Emby in a docker or vm of some sort with a different ip from the host machine.

You can't access it on localhost in OP's scenario, that is valid only if accessing locally from server machine.

You'd connect through LANIP:port.

That’s what his post made it seem like. His tv is direct connected to the server pc via hdmi.

Ah, I get you now, had something else in mind. You are correct, then either would work (was looking at TV as a client - which is not, server machine is also the client).

In that case choice of client apps will be limited as well: either Theater Store (for a limited time) or a browser.

Nope, just using tv as monitor with hdmi cable.

Shouldn't have any issues but you will be limited to a browser so you may need to look at your media's codecs for playback methods.

Yep. TV as display and using browser you'll have to make sure all video can direct stream or the server has enough juice to transcode in software.

Why is this restriction in place?

I realise Emby has to authenticate that you are a Premier user, but surely it can check that user EODCrafter is indeed a Premier user and knows that he has Premier membership that is either;

1. Lifetime, so if that's the case record that somewhere and stop authenticating, what's the point?

2. His membership is time limited, so stop authenticating until his expiry date falls due.

I'm assuming this information could be encrypted so it can't be moved/copied to another installation to cheat the system?

I was just afraid of having no internet, emby would lock out server from playing my movies and tv shows. Server definitely has the power to transcode.....It's a NUC.

You should be fine. Apps and premiere features get locked out after being isolated for some time. Then it falls back to free mode with the limits listed in the matrix.

Probably to stop people from sharing their premium account.

The most time I would be "offgrid" would be a week or two. Not sure about cellphone Hotspot but all looks OK for now.

Worst comes to worst, I could just use VLC or Kodi to stream my media. Thanks guys!
